Projects Engineer - Mining
Underground Expansion

Reporting directly to the Project Manager and indirectly to the Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer will be responsible for managing the implementation of infrastructure and procurement for the Underground Expansion Project. In addition, the incumbent will take legal responsibility for men and machinery in the section and manage this area to obtain optimum machine, underground equipment performance and engineering availability as well as achieve production targets.

Key performance areas:

  • Legal appointee for the Project Section
  • Manage all site engineering and construction resources associated with the project
  • Provide technical support for the implementation work
  • Implement project controls
  • Develop and maintain the core capability of the implementation team
  • Manage stakeholder roles and expectations
  • Represent the project in mine management forums
  • Scope drafting and management functions
  • Incorporate standards and specifications – as required
  • Manage scope changes, deviations and decisions for capital project votes
  • Integrate work in terms of utilisation of mine infrastructure and facilities.

Minimum requirements:

  • A B degree or National Higher Diploma in Engineering
  • A Government Certificate of Competency (Mines and Works)
  • A Certificate/Diploma in Project Management would be an advantage
  • Experience in large mining expansion/development projects
  • Experience in resource development projects
  • Operational experience in an underground mine
  • Operational experience in a leadership role
  • A valid Code 08 driver’s licence
  • Sound computer skills.

C&I Mechanician (Ore Processing)

The successful candidate will maintain, service, repair and modify Debex X-Ray machines, electronic, electrical, pneumatic and mechanical instruments and process control systems in the Ore Processing Department.

Key performance areas:
  • Investigate and diagnose problems and breakdowns to determine resource requirements and order spares
  • Carry out repairs, maintenance and preventative maintenance work on all C&I control systems to comply with product technical specifications
  • Co-ordinate and monitor equipment availability to ensure adherence to production parameters
  • Continuously analyse equipment efficiencies to recommend or implement improvements and changes to maximise operations
  • Attend to relevant administrative functions, such as data pack (loop drawing) management.

Minimum requirements:

  • An N3 Certificate, with an Instrumentation Mechanician Trade Test Certificate or N3 Certificate with an Electrical Trade Test Certificate and Debex X-Ray Machine experience
  • 3 years’ relevant industrial experience in control and instrumentation and Debex X-Ray Machines
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Siemens S7 PLC and Communication systems
  • Knowledge of SCADA (Citect)
  • Knowledge of standard field instruments
  • Knowledge of standard control systems

  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Ventilation Officer
(Underground Expansion)

The successful candidate will be responsible for initiating, assisting with, advising on, investigating, auditing, reporting on and over-inspecting the Ventilation system and associated activities within his/her area of responsibility.

Key performance areas:
  • Make recommendations on routine inspections concerning Ventilation
  • Assist with internal/external audits
  • Co-ordinate Ventilation in the workplace
  • Be prepared to work odd shifts and be on standby as per the departmental requirements
  • Design and implement an effective ventilation system in compliance with relevant legislation and controls
  • Be a team player, able to work under pressure in a project environment.

Minimum requirements:

  • A minimum of a Grade 12 with Maths and Science as subjects
  • A Chamber of Mines Certificate in Mine Environmental Control. A Blasting Certificate will be an advantage
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a hygiene discipline in Mine Environmental Control. Experience on a large-scale project will be an advantage
  • Experience in the design and implementation of a ventilation project
  • A Code 08 driver’s licence
  • Computer literacy in MS Office, as well as Vuma (or a similar application).

Cullinan Diamond Mine, part of Petra Diamonds, is situated in the town of Cullinan, 30km east of Pretoria. The Mine is currently mining at a depth of 747 metres, using mechanised trackless block-cave mining.

Senior Training and Development Practitioner: Mining Training

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing Mining and Underground Driver Training.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinate and maintain quality control of Mining and Underground Driver Training
  • Conduct moderation
  • Develop training programmes
  • Design and develop assessments
  • Ensure compliance with MQA and ISO standards
  • Stay abreast of the requirements of Section 10 of the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Ensure adherence to Safety, Health and Environmental programme goals and objectives.

Requirements:

  • A Blasting Certificate or National Certificate – Rock Breaking Underground Hard Rock
  • 5 years’ mining experience as a Miner
  • 5 years’ mining training experience
  • Certificate of Fitness (Red Ticket)
  • ETDP Level 4 Certificate in Facilitation or equivalent qualification
  • MQA and SAQA knowledge
  • Certification as an ISO 9001 Auditor
  • Certification as an Assessor
  • Certification as a Moderator
  • PC literacy in Microsoft Office and the Windows system
  • A driver’s licence
  • Sound verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills in English
  • Sound planning, leadership and organisational abilities
  • Independent, self-motivated and proactive thinking
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • The ability to interface with all customers.

Senior Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Officer

The successful candidate will organise and conduct routing ventilation and occupational hygiene observations.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Organise and conduct:
    * Routing measurements pertaining to the ventilation standards and regulations
    * Sampling of general atmosphere
    * Air quality surveys
    * Underground water sampling
    * Quarterly checks on underground firefighting equipment, as well as interpret results and make recommendations
  • Update the emergency plans that are required by law
  • Draw up layouts on auxiliary ventilation changeovers
  • Be responsible for measuring instruments
  • Manage and control subordinates.

Requirements:

  • A Grade 12 with Maths and Science
  • An Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (an Advanced Certificate in Mine Environmental Control will be an advantage)
  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience
  • PC literacy, including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Planner

The successful candidate will assist clients to continuously improve equipment effectiveness by implementing and administering asset management systems and procedures, particularly in the areas of information management, work planning and control, performance measurement and maintenance tactics, through effective delegation and management of resources.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Administer and plan maintenance activities
  • Implement, optimise and manage CMMS
  • Ensure continuous asset management
  • Analyse/interpret maintenance history and prepare feedback reports
  • Perform drawing, documentation and modification control
  • Motivate and control the planning department workforce, maintain discipline, minimise absenteeism and ensure adequate staff
  • Assist with continuous maintenance tactics via processing, including RCM and other failure analysis methods
  • Manage equipment, documents and tools
  • Assess the performance of team members
  • Train and develop employees under supervision
  • Ensure effective administrative systems and procedures, including disciplinary issues
  • Assist with the implementation, optimisation and management of the Asset Management Improvement Programme
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations.

Requirements:

  • A Grade 12 (a technical qualification/diploma would be an advantage)
  • A minimum of 5 years’ engineering/maintenance/manufacturing experience
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience would be an advantage
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Windows
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and systems
  • Basic knowledge of financial systems
  • Experience in the implementation and operation of CMMS, plus knowledge of latest developments and trends in asset management, would be preferred
  • Familiarity with concepts of project planning and scheduling, including project management software, would be preferred
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills
  • Goal orientation and a proactive problem-solving approach in anticipating problem areas, taking corrective action to eliminate deviations.
