Research Associate

Under the supervision of the Director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program and the NTI Project Manager, the Research Associate will assist in the operations and implementation of activities tasked to and performed at CNS, as described in the duties below. This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) staff position.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Management of the NTI country profiles and databases for Eurasian states and contributions to other NTI deliverables at the direction of the NTI project lead. This includes supervision and tasking of CNS graduate students working on the Eurasia NTI deliverables, and quality control/editing of their work.

• Conduct original research and write reports and scholarly articles on the proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, their means of delivery and strategies for control, in the context of the Eurasian states.

• Assist in the organization and execution of seminars, meetings, visiting fellows programs, and outreach activities related to nonproliferation issues in Eurasia.

• Assist with administrative tasks related to Eurasia Nonproliferation Program management.



Job Qualifications:

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

• Excellent analytical, research, writing, and editing skills.

• Previous research experience and publications on nonproliferation topics relevant to Eurasia, particularly regarding Russia and its WMD programs and nonproliferation policies.

• Knowledge of strategic trade controls and illicit trafficking issues, and how they relate to the states of Eurasia.

• Direct field experience in Russia and other former Soviet states.

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.

• Capable of multi-tasking and working in challenging, intense, and dynamic environment

• Detail-oriented, well-organized and capable of completing deliverables on tight deadlines.

• Ability to manage work of graduate students.

• Willingness and ability to adapt to changing technologies and systems.

• Microsoft Office software proficiency.

• Familiarity with web-based social networking tools.

• Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates.

• Knowledge of submarines desirable.



Education/Experience:

• M.A. degree in regional studies, political science, international relations, or equivalent experience in the field is required.

• Native or near-native fluency in English is required.

• Fluency in Russian is highly desirable.

• Fluency in an additional language of the region is a plus.

• Previous research experience and publications on WMD nonproliferation topics with a focus on Eurasia are desirable.

• Previous management and supervisory experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements/Environment:
