Description
Wide Horizons (WH), established in 2006, is a ten-month residential program for young adult refugees and migrants along the Thai-Burma border interested in becoming leaders in social development organizations. Every year the school takes 24 students committed to working with their communities, and develops their skills in advanced English language (speaking, reading, writing), computers (Excel, video editing, web design, etc.) and community development (including project management, participatory development, capacity building) with an emphasis on leadership and critical thinking. The language of instruction for all classes is English. Students are 20-30 years old, have intermediate English skills, and represent many of Burma’s diverse ethnic groups. Following the 10-month academic program, students enter into a one-year internship with local community-based organizations that work to improve humanitarian and social services for refugees, migrants, and individuals living in Burma.

The Community Development Instructor would be expected to teach lessons on community development topics and English language skills 15-20 hours per week according to a pre-designed (though flexible) curriculum, coordinate community development projects in partnership with locally based organizations, sleep on campus 2 nights a week for the first trimester, and participate actively in all aspects of academic, extracurricular, community and administrative life at the school.


Core Responsibilities
Plan and deliver participatory, student-centered classes on Community Development skills and intermediate-advanced English based on the WH curriculum 3 hours a day, 5 days a week
Document, provide feedback on, and collaborate with Academic Support to improve the curriculum
Document, prepare and administer exams and projects at the end of each trimester and in an ongoing basis
Provide academic support to students through office hours at least two nights per week and in individual feedback
Coordinate guest speakers and trainers from local non-governmental and community based organizations (CBOs)
Coordinate, supervise, and assess students’ community development projects
Attend and participate actively in weekly school management meetings and facilitate disciplinary action with WH students where necessary.
As educator on campus, model interactive, cooperative learning with staff and students through a participatory leadership style
Help maintain meaningful partnerships between local CBOs/NGOs, the Mae Sot community, and the Wide Horizons Program through correspondence, meetings, joint projects, and campus events
Live on campus a minimum of two nights per week for the first trimester
Assist WH school coordinator and CBO supervisors in designing the students’ internship responsibilities after the completion of the 10-month academic year
Participate in the recruitment of students and staff for the 2014 - 2015 school year


Qualifications/ Experiences/Competencies

Bachelors Degree (BA, BSc) or equivalent, relevant experience
Native or Native-like English Proficiency
Experience with community development and project management concepts (including experience with writing grant proposals and reports, qualitative data collection)
At least one year experience in teaching adult English language learners
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a team
Comfort working in low resource settings
Highly motivated, flexible and have international experience
Culturally sensitive and discrete
International experience with non-governmental and community based organizations a plus
