We also honor the sacrifices and service of our U.S. servicemen and women and their families and help military organizations be more effective by raising awareness and spotlighting best practices. And all work engages leading partners from the business community, non-profit organizations, civil society, academia, and government. Every project the Institute undertakes is developed for real outcomes in the real world.
Position
Reporting to the Director of Human Freedom at the George W. Bush Institute, the Program Manager, Freedom Advocate Initiative, will manage efforts to engage and support today’s dissidents. In this new position, the Program Manager, Freedom Advocate Initiative, will be responsible for developing and implementing Institute efforts to support individuals who are advancing the spread of democracy and liberty around the world. These efforts currently include:
  • Extending moral and practical support to freedom advocates
  • Offering 1-year fellowships, adjunct or in residence, to freedom advocates
  • Hosting conferences, seminars, and other forums for freedom advocates to learn from and interact with each other
  • Convening working groups to develop content, outreach, and engagement strategies for target freedom advocate communities
Responsibilities
  • Support implementation of the overall Human Freedom strategy and achievement of program goals and measurable outcomes
  • Monitor threats to today’s freedom advocates, identifying opportunities and recommending ways to respond to needs and challenges
  • Grow and support an active network of freedom advocates, especially leveraging technology and digital media to reach and engage a dispersed global audience.
  • Grow and engage an active network of experts, business leaders, policy makers, journalists, and NGOs that can be called on to help support freedom advocates
  • Manage requests for support of individual freedom advocates
  • Help identify candidates and support recruitment of Freedom Advocate Fellows
  • Create new Freedom Advocate Fellow strategy and execute plan to integrate fellows into Human Freedom initiatives, identifying clear goals and work plans (working groups, writings, speaking engagements, other)
  • Plan and execute conferences, seminars, and other forums where freedom advocates can learn from and connect with each other
  • Work closely with the Freedom Collection team on efforts to reach and support target dissident audiences, especially managing the activity of expert working groups
  • Design and execute measurement & evaluation strategy to gauge program impact
  • Represent the Bush Institute in forums relevant to our support for freedom advocates


Qualifications


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of programmatic or research experience in democracy promotion, human rights, or related fields
  • Strong professional network in democracy promotion, human rights or related fields, and a desire to work collaboratively both inside and outside the Institute
  • Demonstrated experience working with freedom advocates, understanding and responding to their needs with discretion and cultural sensitivity
  • Innovative thinker around uses of technology in democracy promotion, human rights, and related fields
  • Successful track record in project management, including developing program plans, setting goals, using resources effectively, and managing through to results
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; experience creating reports, delivering presentations, and sharing information & ideas with others
  • Creative problem solver who generates new ideas and can adjust plans to meet changing needs
  • Experience supporting complex projects with multiple, diverse, and global stakeholders
  • Passion for the mission of the Bush Center and Bush Institute
  • Prefer Arabic language skills and Middle East/North Africa regional expertise
