Research Analyst, Global Asset Allocation


The Department

Asset Allocation Research
The Asset Allocation Research Team (AART) consists of 7 research analysts in Boston, Massachusetts reporting to the Director of Research.  This team aggregates, synthesizes and conducts asset allocation research on behalf of the division. This process is a critical input to AAD's investment performance.
The Position
Reporting to the Director of Research, the research analyst would be a key member of the Asset Allocation Research Team (AART).  They would maintain and continue development of AART’s comprehensive business cycle models.  A strong knowledge of business cycle economics, industrial cycle analysis and leading indicators is highly appreciated.  Familiarity with multi-asset investing and financial market analysis is valued. 
The analyst would be a critical thinker who is also a self-starter capable of working with large databases, econometric modeling, and programming to achieve actionable asset allocation conclusions.  An advanced degree in economics or equivalent, a strong statistical and econometric background, and strong analytical skills are critical. 
The analyst will need the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.  The analyst will be comfortable defending investment views in an environment of deliberation.  The analyst would be able to translate analytical approaches into actionable asset allocation investment recommendations.The position is located at the company’s headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
 Responsibilities
  • Help portfolio managers and analysts across Fidelity, and GAA in particular, to understand the global business cycle and what trends are evolving in major economies around the world.
  • Maintain and build recession models for the G20 economies, and develop regional recession views for North America, Europe and Asia.
  • Maintain and develop views on the four phases of the business cycle for the US, Euro area, China and Japan.
  • Initiate timely and relevant ad hoc research pieces highlighting important macro developments.
  • Leverage market-based information and fundamental analysis to inform cycle views.
  • Provide systematic business cycle signals on a monthly basis, and collaborate with others within GAA to ensure that they are incorporated into asset allocation portfolio decisions.
  • Communicate research findings and investment views through regular meetings, reports, emails and one-on-one direct exchanges.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with equity and fixed income PMs and analysts across the organization.
 Qualifications
  • 5-10 years financial services or economic analysis experience required
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in economics or related field required
  • Experience in asset allocation, economic strategy or business cycle modeling desired
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and project management skills
  • Record of success across projects of varying size/complexity required
  • Strong fundamental understanding of economic data required
  • Ability and confidence to work effectively in both independent and group settings
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and strong personal and professional integrity
