Dean, School of Public Policy

George Mason University, a public research university, is seeking the next Dean for its School of Public Policy. George Mason is the largest university in Virginia with over 33,000 students and more than 1,400 faculty members. Recently identified by the U.S. News & World Report as the top “up and coming” university in the United States, George Mason University is an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with global distinction in a range of academic fields including public policy. The 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities places George Mason University in the top 40 universities in social science. The university is a leading example of the modern, public university. 

Located in Arlington, Va., just minutes from Washington, D.C., the School of Public Policy (www.policy.gmu.edu/) is a leading graduate public policy school in the United States and serves a diverse student body from across the nation and the world. The school, noted for its innovative approaches to public policy education and research, enrolls approximately 1,000 students in six professional master’s degree programs and a research-oriented Ph.D. program, and also sponsors a range of executive education initiatives. The school engages 50 full-time instructional and research faculty from across a wide-range of disciplines including anthropology, economics, engineering, finance, history, political science and sociology who are highly active in scholarly research—much of it externally funded—at the regional, national and global levels. 

Responsibilities: 
The Dean of the School of Public Policy is responsible for the academic standards, fiscal management and overall development of the school. The incumbent will work closely with the faculty in setting the academic agenda for the school—participating in faculty governance and representing the school within the university and wider academic, business and policy communities. The Dean also will oversee the generation of external resources including sponsored research funding, philanthropic support, and major gifts. 

Qualifications: 
The Dean must be a respected national leader in the field of public policy with the background and experiences consistent with academic appointment at the rank of Professor; and the ability to lead and manage a complex, diverse academic organization. International experience also is desirable. The Dean reports to the University Provost.
