Advisor, Youth Livelihoods Global Initiative
Child Poverty is an exciting economic and cross-cutting Global Initiative (GI) that will encompass Save the Children’s economic poverty, social protection, youth livelihoods, food security and livelihoods work. Our goal is to delivers strategic and measurable outcomes for children across the world.
The Deputy Director and Advisor is a leadership position working closely with the Director of the Child Poverty Global Initiative, who is hosted and supported by Save the Children UK, on behalf of the Save the Children global organization. The Deputy Director and Advisor will focus his/her work primarily in support of youth livelihoods and empowerment along the continuum of urban/rural and development/emergency contexts in countries at different stages of development, with particular focus on marginalized youth, including adolescents.
Responsibilities
Global Program Strategy and Thought Leadership
- Lead development of a GI strategy for youth employment and entrepreneurship that empowers deprived young people, including adolescents, to make a successful transition to safe and decent work.
- Assist with development of urban livelihoods and child poverty GI sub-strategy
- Identify strengths and gaps in SC knowledge and programming approaches to deprived youth, including adolescents, and lead efforts to address
- Help set programming and fundraising priorities, and agree upon common marketing messages.
Coordination and Communication
- Coordinate development of the GI strategy for youth employment and entrepreneurship with other Save organizations and Country Offices.
- Play a leadership role in Education and Livelihoods for Youth Empowerment (ELYE) working group and support cross-integration of this work between the Child Poverty and Education GIs.
Networking & Representation
- Help position SC as a thought leader.
- Serve as a credible voice on technical and policy issues in the areas of youth employment and entrepreneurship, and urban livelihoods/urban child poverty.
- Raise SC’s profile in the areas of youth employment and entrepreneurship, and urban livelihoods with stakeholders and partners (e.g., SCI country offices, SC members, academia/researchers, public and private donors, UN partners, other INGOs and the media).
Knowledge Management & Dissemination
- Identify, document and share best practices in the field of youth employment and entrepreneurship, and urban livelihoods.
- Gather, synthesize and disseminate information on Save the Children’s youth livelihoods programs and results as a major component of the GI’s overall knowledge strategy.
- Identify Technical Assistance capabilities and resources for this area within the movement and among close partners. Share information with Members and Country Offices.
- Educate fundraisers across the movement about SC’s aspirations and core capabilities.
Required
- 10+ years of international development experience designing, implementing and evaluating programs relating to youth employment and entrepreneurship, and urban livelihoods (i.e., economics and poverty, food security, resilience, and social protection) with a focus on marginalized youth and adolescents.
- Master’s degree in economics, business, international development or related fields.
- Significant senior level international experience designing, implementing and reporting on thematic strategies and programs.
- Developing country experience, preferably through long-term assignments related to the themes outlined above.
- Proven senior level experience leading diverse, complex initiatives and teams to achieve agreed objectives.
- Experience of effective team management including building shared objectives, quality control, evaluation, motivation, performance management, staff development and training.
- Knowledge of policy, research and evidence-based methodologies, and economic metrics with regards to child poverty programming.
- A clear understanding of and commitment to gender analysis in informing programs and policy, with a demonstrated track record of applying gender analysis to the challenges facing young people, including adolescents.
- Thorough knowledge of public and program policy and track record of influencing in the following areas: youth employment and entrepreneurship, and urban livelihoods (i.e., economics and poverty, food security, and social protection) in development and humanitarian contexts in countries at different stages of development.
- Proven ability to broker collaboration and engagement between organizations to contribute to shared goals and objectives
- Demonstrated communication skills including fluent spoken and written English
- Strong inter-personal and advisory skills, including the ability to guide and influence colleagues and partners both face-to-face and from a distance
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% of time
- An understanding of and commitment to Save the Children’s mission, values and program approaches
