The Conflict Prevention Program
The Conflict Prevention Program addresses conflict prevention in its broadest sense, as a variety of activities aimed at preventing the initial outbreak, spread, escalation and recurrence of violent conflict.
The Senior Researcher will be assigned mainly to two new projects under the themes of Institutions and Governance, and Education.
Duties and responsibilities
· Conducting policy relevant original research on topics falling within the Conflict Prevention Program, with particular focus on two new projects – ‘The Role of Education in Conflict Prevention’, and ‘City Diplomacy: the Role of Municipalities in Conflict Prevention’;
· Contribution to the development and implementation of the substantive long-term program on Conflict Prevention;
· Coordination and management of projects and project staff, with particular emphasis on the two aforementioned projects;
· Publishing in academic and policy orientated journals and other outlets;
· Representation of The Hague Institute in public debates and in (inter)national media;
· Development activities in cooperation with the development office;
· Setting up and maintaining relevant networks of national and international stakeholders.
Qualifications:
· A PhD in international relations, political sciences, peace and conflict studies, or related discipline within the Social Sciences
· At least 3 years of professional experience in one or more of the following fields: conflict prevention/ resolution, peacebuilding, governance or education or related field of expertise.
· Demonstrated experience and affinity with initiating and carrying out international academic/ policy research in the field of Conflict Prevention at the international and/or field levels, including academic and/or policy-oriented publications.
· Expertise in either local governance and/or education in conflict-affected contexts
· Demonstrated managerial and interpersonal skills, including a track record of successful project management.
· Demonstrated experience in setting up, leading and coordinating interdisciplinary and international projects and research groups.
· The capacity to manage and embrace the opportunities and challenges of an innovative and growing institution in an international environment.
· An entrepreneurial attitude and a demonstrated experience in obtaining funds.
· A track record in building and developing relevant international networks.
· Knowledge of and experience with relevant international organizations.
· Knowledge of the English language (fluent) and of at least one and preferably two other official languages of the UN.
· Excellent diplomatic and communications skills.
