The Conflict Prevention Program
The Conflict Prevention Program addresses conflict prevention in its broadest sense, as a variety of activities aimed at preventing the initial outbreak, spread, escalation and recurrence of violent conflict.
The Researcher will be assigned mainly to two new projects under the themes of Institutions and Governance, and Education.

Duties and responsibilities:

· Conducting research on topics falling within the Conflict Prevention Program, with particular focus on two new projects – ‘The Role of Education in Conflict Prevention’, and ‘City Diplomacy: the Role of Municipalities in Conflict Prevention’;
· Supporting and implementing projects led by a Senior Researcher or the Head of Program.
· Performing consultancy assignments.
· Organizing seminars and events in cooperation with the events coordinator.
· Providing support in the process of generating new assignments: contributing to written proposals in accordance with clients' requirements, collecting relevant information, monitoring progress.
· Participating in project groups, committees or project teams inside and outside The Hague Institute.
· Building a relevant knowledge network, maintaining media contacts and providing information to a variety of audiences about ongoing projects or activities.
· Is accountable for results, quality and progress of the work.

Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in a relevant field (international relations, political sciences, peace and conflict studies, or related discipline within the Social Sciences).
· At least 2 years of professional experience in one or more of the following fields: conflict prevention/ resolution, peacebuilding, governance or education or related field of expertise.
· Ability to contribute to policy-relevant, academic research and publications, based on own expertise.
· Up-to-date knowledge in own area of focus. Previous knowledge of local governance and/or education in conflict-affected states is desirable.
· Willingness to travel abroad.
· Knowledge of international organizations and the international courts and tribunals located in The Hague.
· Excellent organizational, communication and analytical skills.
· Ability to build and maintain a network of relationships.
· Willingness to travel abroad.
· Knowledge of the English language (fluent) and of at least one and preferably two other official languages of the UN.

Terms and conditions of employment:

The appointment will be in accordance with Dutch law;
The Researcher will be appointed for a period of one year, which, after an evaluation of performance may be extended into a permanent contract.
