LEI employs 266 staff at locations in The Hague, Wageningen and Lelystad. LEI has 7 research teams working closely together in multidisciplinary research projects.

Research Team International Policy
32 staff strong, the international policy research team provides international agencies, governments, NGOs and businesses with independent research and advice through:
  • Modelling complex issues such as global and local food and nutrition security, yield gap analysis and the bio based economy.
  • Macro-economic analysis, using advanced quantitative analytical tools and scenario development, for example on the international trade implications of policy decisions.
  • Impact analysis of policy decisions such as sustainability transitions in the value chain (e.g. coffee and cocoa.)
The research portfolio contains over 90 projects executed by teams of LEI researchers, frequently as part of a larger international consortium.

Functions
As manager of the team, you are responsible for the efficient and effective coordination and organization of the research process. Your most important tasks are:
  • Stimulating researchers to take responsibility and to achieve high quality services through (multidisciplinary) team collaboration. You show the way in your collaboration with other research managers and program leaders.
  • Being a sparring partner for the team on strategic research questions and communication on relevant themes.
  • Managing staff capacity in research projects and maintaining quality of research by, for example, being actively involved in reviewing research results and communication of results (such as reports, articles, web publications) by your team.
  • Sharing your vision on client-oriented research with impact and contributing to further LEI organizational development as part of the research managers group.
  • Inspiring researchers to continually improve, learn and innovate. You do this through matching research capacity with client demands. Therefore, you occasionally participate in (academic) networks and events.
  • Supporting researchers in their professional competencies development and their employability/ career development.

Requirements

Training and experience
  • You have at least a master's degree in (agricultural) economics, econometrics or related subject.
  • You are an experienced people manager at a university or research organization, preferably in a public-private setting. Consequently, you are experienced in leading teams of professionals.
  • You are well versed in the acquisition and management of applied research projects in an international setting.
  • You have a knowledge of, or affinity with agriculture and rural development in an international context.
  • Experience in modelling and tools/ methods for quantitative analysis would be an advantage.
  • You have a clear strategy and vision on the products and markets in which your team operates.

Competencies
  • You have excellent skills in people management and leading a team of professionals.
  • You have experience in the applied research process.
  • You have experience in project management and the methods and practices it involves.
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English.
Personality
  • You are an inspiring leader able to galvanize people into action, with a keen eye for quality, results and your team development.
  • You stand for your team and its members and take responsibility for your team and its results!
  • You are a team player and like to work on creative new ways to work on team- and LEI-management development.
