ASSISTANT PROJECT MANAGER
GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR AFGHANISTAN Global Partnership for Afghanistan (GPFA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization registered locally for work in Afghanistan. Since 2004, it has helped rural Afghan men and women launch farm-based businesses that provide sustainable incomes, alleviate poverty, and improve the environment. Farmer-owned enterprises such as fruit and nut orchards, tree nurseries, vineyards, and timber woodlots are the cornerstones of our programs. GPFA also builds and strengthens the support systems that sustain the agricultural sector. GPFA has administrative offices in New York City and Kabul with field offices in 8 Afghan provinces. The organization consists of a small administrative staff in New York (NY) and more than 150 employees in Afghanistan. As an international NGO, GPFA offers competitive salaries and benefits similar to those of other NGOs working in Afghanistan.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Project Manager is responsible for assisting the Project Manager in implementing and managing a multi-year economic development project that will support farmer entrepreneurs and investors to construct and manage greenhouses for production and export of high value horticultural products, encourage the formation of a greenhouse growers association, and create linkages with national, regional and international markets. The project supports development of related extension services, university curricula and teacher training, and research capabilities. The Assistant Project Manager, an Afghan national, will coordinate a team of specialists who will work with the support of GPFA management and program support services to achieve project objectives. Preferably, the Assistant Project Manager will add technical expertise to the project in association/cooperative development, agriculture, protected cropping, and export marketing.
The position is based in Nangarhar with required travel to GPFA Kabul Headquarters, project districts, and areas where similar activities are being undertaken by GPFA and others.
QUALIFICATIONS: *Minimum of 4 years experience in managing rural development projects in Afghanistan *University degree and field experience in agriculture or related fields, post-graduate study preferred *Familiarity with building and managing greenhouses and protected crop structures *Project management experience *Private sector orientation, preferably in agriculture and related fields *Experienced in working with cooperatives and producer associations *Experienced in working with GIROA and providing capacity building services *Ability to work within and manage work teams *Proven ability to work in multi-cultural environments *Familiar with working in Eastern Afghanistan * Willingness to live in and to travel to and from provinces included in the project portfolio * Dari and Pashto writing, reading and speaking skills required * Ability to work read and write English fluently
