MANAGER FOR THE EUROPEAN COALITION FOR CORPORATE JUSTICE (ECCJ)

The European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) is recruiting a manager. The person will lead the coalition mand be in charge of ECCJs secretariat in Brussels. Strong management skills, a strategic approach and experience with advocacy and working with civil society groups are required.

The post will start 1st December 2011 for a period of 1 year, with the aim of extending the contracting in case of good performance. The ECCJ secretariat is based in the Friends of the Earth Europe office in Mundo-B, Brussels and the manager is employed by Friends of the Earth Europe.

ECCJ promotes corporate accountability (CA), specifically by advocating measures for mandatory non-financial reporting by companies; for improved access to justice for victims in developing countries of EU based companies; and for liability of companies for their impacts in the South.

We bring together national platforms of civil society organizations (CSOs) including NGOs, trade unions, consumer advocacy groups and academic institutions from all over Europe. ECCJ represents over 250 CSOs present in 14 European countries such as FIDH, Global Witness and national chapters of Oxfam, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Action Aid and Friends of the Earth. ECCJ aims to develop and implement a common lobby and campaign strategy on Corporate Accountability aimed at the European Union and its member states by focusing on capacity building and knowledge sharing among NGOs in Europe, including the new member states. For the overall management of the coalition, we are looking for a highly organized and motivated individual with strong strategic skills and good knowledge of EU decision making processes. We need a person to lead the work of the coalition and take the right strategic decisions in campaigning and lobbying work. The manager is expected to be responsible for managing a full time campaigner and an intern.

ECCJ aims to:

  • Influence Corporate Accountability and CSR policies of the EU and its member states.
  • Inform the general public about the need for greater corporate accountability by governments and companies (member states as well as the EU) and engage the public in debates on these issues.
  • Promote consistency and transparency in the implementation of EU policies on Corporate Accountability and CSR by the member states, such as EU directives on transparency, human rights and the environment.
  • Increase European cooperation amongst NGOs working on Corporate Justice: exchange experiences and information; agree on joint advocacy strategies towards the EU and organise joint activities.
  • Build capacity and knowledge among NGOs, particularly in the new member states, on the need for greater Corporate Accountability by governments and companies (member states as well as the EU).

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Lead the European Coalition for Corporate Justice and its secretariat;
  • Lead on the EU advocacy strategy and support the coordination of the national advocacy strategies;
  • Represent ECCJ in our approach towards relevant stakeholders at the EU and member state level;
  • Diversify the sources of funding for ECCJ;
  • Manage the coalition’s finances;
  • Report to the ECCJ Steering Group (SG) and ensure timely debate and decision making by the SG;
  • Track relevant developments and ensure timely communication with and between coalition members;
  • Organise coalition events and meetings;
  • Lead on communication work for the coalition;
  • Line manage other ECCJ staff.

Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in leading civil society platforms or coalitions at an international and/or European level;
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in EU policy advocacy;
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in fundraising at the international/European level;
  • Competencies in the field of Corporate accountability / Business and Human rights;
  • Experience in financial management;
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders from different backgrounds (Civil Society Groups, business, governments, parliamentarians, etc)
  • Knowledge of International and/or European Law is an asset;

Profile:

  • Strong management skills and good ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
  • Strong strategic skills: be able to identify various options and solutions and assess which ones are the best for ECCJ;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - able to articulate clear messages to different audiences;
  • Complete fluency in English with proficiency in at least one other EU language (preferably French);
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team;
  • Flexible - able to undertake occasional travel within Europe;

We offer:

We offer a position starting the 1st of December 2011 for a period of 1 year with the intention to prolong the contract. We can offer a gross monthly salary between Euro 3.200 and 3.635 on the basis of a 5 d/w contract.
