Diesel Mechanic

Assmang Limited’s Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, situated approximately 7 kilometres west of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape
(± 200km west of Kimberley), requires the services of the following individuals:


Diesel Mechanic
(Paterson Grading: C2)


Requirements: • A Trade Certificate as a Diesel Mechanic • A Grade 12/N3 • A minimum of 3 years’ basic Diesel Mechanic experience (postapprenticeship) • Caterpillar experience will serve as an advantage • A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence • Knowledge of tools and equipment • Knowledge of faultfinding techniques • Computer literacy in an Integrated Risk Assessment System, as well as MS Word and Excel • Basic mathematical/measurements knowledge • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures • Communication and interpersonal skills • Diagnostic skills • Good housekeeping skills • Hand-eye coordination • Analytical and assembling skills • Planning, organising and communication skills • Conceptual thinking.

Key performance areas include, inter alia: • Maintaining, finding faults on and repairing equipment • Monitoring motor licences/tyres and reporting any inaccuracies to the Foreman • Keeping the vehicles under his/her responsibility in a good condition and ensuring that vehicles are safe for operational usage • Scheduling duties as per job card requirements • Attending to breakdowns • Providing feedback on inspections, etc to line management • Inspecting all mechanical equipment to identify current and potential future defects • Continuously inspecting all mechanical equipment to repair identified defects in time to prevent breakdowns, damaged equipment, injuries and production delays • Planning and ordering parts to minimise production delays, due to machinery failure • Ensuring efficient customer service and professional communication when liaising with customers, eg stores, transport, foreman, plant, etc • Ensuring all equipment, parts and tools are cleaned after use and stored in a safe place • Delegating work to Mechanic SS and Toolhandler MS • Performing ad hoc and any other reasonable duties as and when requested from time to time.


The successful candidate must be prepared to work shifts and overtime, and be on standby.

Appointment: Remuneration will be based on competitive, all-inclusive, flexible packages

Preference will be given to suitably qualified Historically Disadvantaged South Africans to support the company’s Employment Equity Plan.

The successful candidates who conform to all said requirements and experience will be appointed on the relevant Paterson grading. Should the successful candidates not conform to all said requirements and experience, but are nonetheless regarded as suitable for appointment to the positions, they will be appointed on a lower, more appropriate grading, until successful achievement of required competencies and skills.

The successful candidates will be appointed subject to being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29/1996 and meeting the requirements of the Company’s Code of Practice – Medical Fitness to work on a Mine. They may also undergo psychometric assessments.
