SHERQ Assistant

Assmang Limited’s Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, situated approximately 7 kilometres west of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape
(± 200km west of Kimberley), requires the services of the following individuals:


SHERQ Assistant
(Paterson Grading: C2)


Requirements: • A Grade 12 • A certificate/diploma in Environmental Management/Rehabilitation/Diversity/Landscaping • A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence • 1 year’s SHERQ experience • 1 year’s experience with Risk Management Systems • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as Achiever and Isometrix • Working knowledge of the Environmental Conservation Act, Hazardous Substances Act, BCOEA, Mine Health and Safety Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act and OHSA • First aid, coaching, time management, planning, organising, analytical, reporting, investigation and communication skills • Knowledge of disciplinary procedures • Knowledge of lockout code procedures • Knowledge of document control • Knowledge of ISO standards.

Key performance areas include, inter alia: • Assisting in ensuring sound alien vegetation control, monitoring and management • Creating project plans and monitoring resources responsible for implementing the plans • Assisting the environmental officer with ensuring legal compliance, licensing and internal policies and procedures • Managing Assmang contractors to ensure legal compliance, licensing and internal policies and procedures • Liaising with various departments and contractors regarding waste management • Coordinating daily inspections and taking remedial actions when necessary • Managing rehabilitation plan according to approved EMPR and reporting on progress to relevant stakeholders • Ensuring compliance with the Environmental Management Programme report and implementing corrective and preventive action if standards are not met • Monitoring stressors and assisting Management with the implementation of remedial actions at affected business operations to minimise negative impact • Assisting line management with the implementation of changes in affected procedures and practices when enforced by legislation or other external requirements • Assisting in ensuring that statutory requirements are met with regard to listed activities, through effective communication with all stakeholders • Identifying potential and manifested stressors and conducting risk assessments • Developing and implementing preventative or monitoring strategies • Evaluating the results of preventative strategies and developing control programmes if and when required • Conducting required audits and identifying shortcomings in requirements and non-conformance to standards, to minimise the impact on the environment • Developing a system to report, on a monthly basis, on all aspects of the Mine’s carbon footprint • Delivering a Mine Carbon Footprint report on a monthly basis to the Superintendent: Environmental Services • Maintaining the SHERQ management system • Proactively identifying and reporting SHERQ risks according to required legislation and company standards • Assessing SHERQ impact as required to determine suitable remedial action • Assisting with the compilation of the annual budget, taking into account previous and current expenditure • Monitoring spending and allocating expenses to appropriate cost account • Adhering to all applicable safety, health and environmental practices and procedures • Promoting a culture of safety and awareness amongst fellow employees on an ongoing basis • Identifying and addressing all unsafe practices or potentially hazardous situations • Conducting mini risk assessments before commencing with any job • Recommending changes to systems so these are congruent • Identifying opportunities to eliminate waste and reduce operating costs • Contributing to employee training and development by conducting on-the-job training where required and reporting accordingly • Maintaining internal relations, including interface across departments, to ensure departmental needs are met and employees are satisfied • Providing relevant and specialised technical support to applicable stakeholders • Performing any ad hoc or other reasonable duties as and when requested from time to time.

Appointment: Remuneration will be based on competitive, all-inclusive, flexible packages

Preference will be given to suitably qualified Historically Disadvantaged South Africans to support the company’s Employment Equity Plan.

The successful candidates who conform to all said requirements and experience will be appointed on the relevant Paterson grading. Should the successful candidates not conform to all said requirements and experience, but are nonetheless regarded as suitable for appointment to the positions, they will be appointed on a lower, more appropriate grading, until successful achievement of required competencies and skills.

The successful candidates will be appointed subject to being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29/1996 and meeting the requirements of the Company’s Code of Practice – Medical Fitness to work on a Mine. They may also undergo psychometric assessments.
