Superintendent: HR Generalist

Assmang Limited’s Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, situated approximately 7 kilometres west of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape
(± 200km west of Kimberley), requires the services of the following individuals:


Superintendent: HR Generalist
(Paterson Grading: D1)


Requirements: • A Grade 12 • A 3-year degree or diploma in Human Resources • Accreditation or registration with the South African Board of Personnel Practitioners will serve as an added advantage • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Human Resources Administration • A minimum of 2 years’ clerical or administrative experience • A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence • Computer literacy in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as Achiever, JDE and Oracle • Knowledge of the Employment Equity Act, BCOEA, Skills Development Act, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Mine Health and Safety Act • True character and integrity, care for people, environment and community • Committed to continuous improvement • The ability to develop and optimise people • Accountable to deliver with excellence • Knowledge of issue-based risk assessment, as per work process • Knowledge of relevant standard procedures and Codes of Practice • Knowledge of document control and filing • Administrative skills and the ability to write reports • Working knowledge of financial business processes • Problem solving, analytical and communication skills • Commercial awareness.

Key performance areas include, inter alia: • Assisting in establishing a positive company brand during the recruitment process through creative recruitment strategies and policies • Controlling retirement, recruitment, terminations, promotions, transfers, change of occupation/grade according to the 5-year plan • Continuously updating the company organogram and structure and distributing to stakeholders • Coordinating the Company’s Long Service Awards and Retirement Functions according to Company procedure on an annual basis or according to Company needs • Compiling, maintaining and updating the contract of service for all company appointments, including permanent and fixed-term contractual appointees according to updated wage agreements, job changes, new procedures and legal compliance documents • Managing organisational trends through data analysis and providing feedback to stakeholders in assisting them with creating an employer of choice • Ensuring the up-to-date filing of all documents in the Central File Section for auditing purposes • Assessing potential SoR/mentoring SoR/overseeing the quality of SoR leadership • Undertaking structured focused development • Monitoring and providing feedback to reports • Conducting performance reviews • Recommending and approving development plans to ensure that an optimised team structure is manned by motivated and empowered staff • Leading according to sound performance management and transformational leadership practices • Promoting teamwork, providing support, managing and evaluating performance • Creating and maintaining individual development plans and performance contracts for subordinates • Ensuring that all Central File processes are aligned with SHERQ, legal and other company requirements • Contributing to annual departmental budgets’ planning and compiling operational, CAPEX and labour budgets for sub-functions, as well as submitting to Management for approval • Effectively managing subfunctions and their objectives in line with approved budgets • Reporting variances as required/recommended and implementing remedial action within the span of control • Reviewing and authorising payments in line with approved budget and policy and submitting for final processing • Identifying operational, labour and CAPEX requirements within the sub-function for efficient delivery of production targets and submitting recommendations to line management • Translating SHERQ goals applicable to the sub-function, as derived from the business plan, into clear direction and implementing effectively • Managing the development and continuous improvement of legal and SHERQ standards and procedures within the span of control • Implementing all SHERQ standards and procedures within the subfunction to ensure compliance • Ensuring the sub-function adheres to statutory safety regulations and Mine standards, procedures and principles, such as PPE and safe working practices • Coordinating and performing regular inspections of area of work and reporting hazards to ensure the working environment is safe and hazard-free • Investigating accidents and incidents and submitting required reports • Conducting and coordinating regular safety meetings with employees and contractors and recording set meetings for future reference • Effectively communicating new regulations and procedures with subordinates • Planning, maintaining and coordinating the safety programme in the sub-function to ensure compliance at all times • Conducting risk assessments in the area of responsibility and taking remedial action where required • Authorising and driving initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity and reducing operating costs • Initiating and leading functional and/or departmental change • Implementing successful change initiatives, planning and ensuring optimal resource utilisation within the designated area • Building, managing and maintaining healthy and diverse workable internal and external relations • Maintaining internal and external relations, including interface with external providers to ensure that departmental needs are met and employees are satisfied • Providing relevant technical support to applicable stakeholders • Performing any ad hoc or other reasonable duties as and when requested from time to time.

Preference will be given to suitably qualified Historically Disadvantaged South Africans to support the company’s Employment Equity Plan.

The successful candidates who conform to all said requirements and experience will be appointed on the relevant Paterson grading. Should the successful candidates not conform to all said requirements and experience, but are nonetheless regarded as suitable for appointment to the positions, they will be appointed on a lower, more appropriate grading, until successful achievement of required competencies and skills.

The successful candidates will be appointed subject to being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29/1996 and meeting the requirements of the Company’s Code of Practice – Medical Fitness to work on a Mine. They may also undergo psychometric assessments.
