Resident Engineer
Assmang Limited’s Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine, situated approximately 7 kilometres west of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape
(± 200km west of Kimberley), requires the services of the following individuals:
Resident Engineer
(Paterson Grading: D4)
Requirements: • A diploma or degree in Engineering • A GCC Certificate in Opencast and Underground Mines • An MBA will serve as an added advantage • 12 years’ experience in engineering and production within a mining environment • 2 years’ management experience in a mining environment • Registration as Professional Engineer (ECSA) will serve as an added advantage • A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project, as well as JDE, Achiever, Isometrix and discipline specific programmes • Working knowledge of the National Water Act, BCOEA, Employment Equity Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, OHSA and Companies Act • Knowledge of risk assessment as per work
process • Coaching skills • Knowledge of disciplinary procedures, budgeting and mini risk assessments • Planning, problem solving, benchmarking, research, communication and organising skills.
Key performance areas include, inter alia: • Ensuring that all legislation relevant to the engineering department is implemented and adhered to • Implementing operational plans that support strategic initiatives • Providing input into departmental and functional strategies • Contributing to annual departmental budgets for sub-function • Effectively managing subfunctions and their objectives, in line with the approved budget • Reviewing and authorising payments in line with the approved budget • Identifying operational, labour and CAPEX requirements within the sub-function for efficient delivery of production • Monitoring compliance with all statutory requirements, policies and guidelines • Ensuring that all systems and
methodologies required to manage health and safety risks efficiently are implemented • Creating and enhancing safety awareness towards assuring full and extensive participation in terms of ownership and related programmes • Initiating and leading departmental change initiatives and ensuring the implementation thereof • Continuously authorising and leading
the development and implementation of the group • Ensuring efficient and effective management of interfaces that impact or could impact on production objectives • Assessing the potential of SoR/Mentor SoR/overseeing the quality of SoR leadership • Monitoring and providing feedback reports • Promoting teamwork, providing support, managing and evaluating performance by creating and developing individual development plans • Building, managing and maintaining healthy and diverse internal and external relations • Providing relevant specialised technical support to applicable stakeholders • Creating an engineering services structure with the staff complement • Identifying key performance areas for the department and creating a suitable structure and staff complement • Planning labour requirements and motivating line management • Evaluating contractor services prior to appointment • Overseeing contracting services rendered to the Mine • Ensuring that contactors adhere to all rules and regulations on the Mine • Monitoring the performance of contractors in accordance with SLAs • Establishing fully equipped workshop facilities • Assessing the requirements of the workshop facilities and approving plans • Ensuring all equipment purchased is in line with Mine requirements • Acting as custodian of engineering and operation processes and systems on the Mine • Ensuring continuous improvement in the department when benchmarked • Co-developing and signing off on all engineering and operations processes, policies and procedures • Ensuring capital growth by monitoring and planning capital projects and expenditure • Ensuring that the Mine is upgraded and expands in line with the 3-year business plan • Planning the budget and implementing all required actions to ensure sustainable, affordable and profitable capital projects and expansion • Planning the assets of the Mine and ensuring that it is in line with the Mine’s growth strategy • Ensuring that the product adheres to client requirements and making changes where necessary to address needs • Undertaking continuous research and development on processes and equipment • Performing any ad hoc or other reasonable duties as and when requested from time to time.

Preference will be given to suitably qualified Historically Disadvantaged South Africans to support the company’s Employment Equity Plan.
The successful candidates who conform to all said requirements and experience will be appointed on the relevant Paterson grading. Should the successful candidates not conform to all said requirements and experience, but are nonetheless regarded as suitable for appointment to the positions, they will be appointed on a lower, more appropriate grading, until successful achievement of required competencies and skills.
The successful candidates will be appointed subject to being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29/1996 and meeting the requirements of the Company’s Code of Practice – Medical Fitness to work on a Mine. They may also undergo psychometric assessments.
