Director, Communications and Knowledge Management

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Communications and Knowledge Management (CKM) provides leadership and technical support to the Center for Pharmaceutical Management (CPM) in the area of knowledge exchange and communications and ensures smooth integration between communications, policy, and knowledge exchange throughout CPM’s projects and activities and with MSH corporate knowledge management and communications strategies and activities. S/he leads the development of CPM’s knowledge management and communications strategies which will capture, synthesize and share information about program activities, lessons learned and best practices among stakeholders that will be used to inform decision-making, advocacy, and policies at the country and global levels. S/he will be responsible for developing effective communications about CPM’s mission and accomplishments to its donors and the broader public. S/he sets and leads CPM’s strategy and implementation activities for communications, information-sharing, learning, and knowledge management in a cost-effective manner. Responsibilities also include media outreach, including developing and distributing media outreach materials such as press releases, pitches, and media fact sheets. S/he leads the CPM Communications Unit and supervises Unit members, including editing, writing, website development/maintenance, and library/information dissemination staff. S/he will also be responsible for tracking and cataloguing media activity for CPM. The Director, CKM serves on the CPM management team and works closely with the Center leadership, Program Directors and Deputies, Country Directors, training and capacity building staff, monitoring and evaluation staff, MSH corporate knowledge management and communications staff, and others to achieve these objectives.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop and oversee implementation of CPM’s communication and knowledge management strategy with an emphasis on documentation and targeted dissemination of key, evidence-based project results; targeted outreach to current and potential donors and clients about CPM services and capabilities; providing guidance to CPM field programs; and coordinating with MSH corporate communications and knowledge management activities.

  2. Serve as the lead Knowledge Management Specialist for the USAID-funded Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS) program.

  3. Build a network of international organizations and partners and collaborate with them in the documentation and transfer of key products and findings to assure that new information, knowledge and experiences are available to all relevant audiences in a timely and user-friendly format.

  4. Align and integrate diverse groups and functions in order to leverage knowledge exchange/communications strategically across the Center including relevant stakeholders.

  5. Establish and promote timely transfer and exchange of knowledge and capture and share best practices/approaches and experiences to relevant stakeholders within and outside the Center.

  6. Identify attitudes and practices characteristic of learning organizations and support establishment and application of fundamental standards governing learning organizations throughout the Center and its projects.

  7. Ensure that all knowledge/communications programs are effective, engaging, and promote a culture of learning and knowledge exchange.

  8. Manage all aspects of CPM’s media outreach and electronic and print marketing collateral (websites, newsletters, annual reports, brochures, official publications, donor materials, reports, presentations, event materials, press releases, media advisories, media fact sheets, etc.).

  9. Contribute to the planning and implementation of a comprehensive, long-term online and offline marketing strategy.

  10. Conduct industry research for external communications purposes, as necessary.

  11. Coordinate and manage archive material, media placements, marketing material, digital photos, client testimonials, etc., working with MSH corporate knowledge management and communications staff.

  12. Ensure timely response to staff information and materials requests.

  13. Work in collaboration with the program managers and with the Director for Capacity Building and Performance Improvement in the development, implementation, and management of an annual training and staff development curriculum for communication/knowledgement management.

  14. Hire and supervise staff of the Communications Unit.

  15. Serves as a member of the CPM management team.

  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Masters degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, organizational learning, knowledge management, or related field, or combination of education and experience.

  2. Progressive experience in a leadership role creating a culture of knowledge exchange, learning, and communications.

  3. Experience in areas of public health preferred and experience working in international development in developing countries is highly desirable.

  4. Experience working with and influencing diverse groups of stakeholders to achieve knowledge exchange objectives.

  5. Proven experience in using social learning and Web 2.0 approaches in knowledge exchange.

  6. Excellent English language skills required with additional French and/or Spanish language skills preferred.

  7. Demonstrated excellent communication skills (written & oral).

  8. Experience in supervising staff and team members as well as experience in team building, leadership, and motivation skills.

  9. Ability and willingness to travel internationally up to 10-15% of time.
