Position Title: Senior Analyst

Job Summary:
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is looking to recruit a highly competent, proactive and self-driven person to fill the position of Senior Analyst. Working in close collaboration with the small Research Department she/he will contribute to the effective and efficient production and delivery of the Ibrahim Index and Ibrahim Forum. The suitable candidate will demonstrate experience in collecting, computing, analysing, interpreting and presenting statistical data, and producing written research findings.
Specific Responsibilities:
Ibrahim Index of African Governance
· Play a key role in the refinement of the governance framework of the Ibrahim Index through analysis of relevant literature;
· Observe and analyse time series quantitative data from third-party sources for the production of the Index;
· Recognise and extract critical indicators from large and complex data sets, and interpret and express those indicators in a governance context;
· Report on observations, trends, and technical methodologies relating to each indicator in the Index;
· Conduct extensive country data analysis and technical note taking;
· Liaise with sources and data providers regarding data availability, errors, and further research;
· Monitor and record source publication dates and data availability and help maintain a database of contacts and organisations for the Research Department;
· Calculate the Ibrahim Index independently – including imputation of missing data, normalisation of data, and data aggregation;
· Assess the robustness of the composite and category scores by calculating margins of error and confidence intervals. This includes research into the most appropriate methods by which to produce estimates that accurately capture imprecision in measurement;
· Demonstrate leadership in disseminating and communicating the Ibrahim Index results at national, regional and international levels.
· Provide general assistance to the Research Department, including preparing presentations, writing reports, proof-reading and tracking African governance related external events;
· Assist with organising logistics for Research Department events, training sessions, seminars and meetings (this may include event planning and coordination; booking flights, transfers, hotel accommodation; arranging visas; preparing welcome packs; taking minutes).
Ibrahim Forum
· Conduct extensive desk-based research and synthesise information from relevant sources;
· Produce statistical analysis on the Forum topic;
· Produce high-quality briefing material on the topics of the Ibrahim Forum
· Demonstrate leadership in disseminating and communicating the Ibrahim Forum findings and outcomes at national, regional and international levels.
Skills, Competencies, Experience and Qualifications:
· Advanced university degree (Masters degree or equivalent) in economics, development studies, political science, social science or related field;
· Minimum of 4 years experience;
· Experience in research methodologies, statistical methods and analysis, including the presentation of statistical data;
· Interest in, and knowledge of, African development and governance;
· Fully IT and Internet literate. Excellent computer skills, particularly MS Office package (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point) and statistical packages (SPSS, Stata);
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language required, other United Nations languages highly desirable);
· Ability to translate technical information for a non-technical audience;
· Strong organisational skills;
· Detail-oriented with an ability to manage time well;
· Demonstrated capacity to handle a variety of multiple concurrent activities;
· Comfortable working as part of a team but also able to work well independently;
· Self-starter with a proactive attitude and who can anticipate needs.

· Support the dissemination of the Index results across the continent by exploring new methods, contacting partner organisations, and providing administrative and logistic support;
· Provide general assistance to the Research Department, including preparing presentations, writing reports, proof-reading and tracking African governance related external events;
· Assist with organising logistics for Research Department events, training sessions, seminars and meetings (this may include event planning and coordination; booking flights, transfers, hotel accommodation; arranging visas; preparing welcome packs; taking minutes).
Ibrahim Forum
· Conduct extensive desk-based research and synthesise information from relevant sources;
· Produce statistical analysis on the Ibrahim Forum topics;
· Produce high-quality briefing material on the Ibrahim Forum topics;
· Demonstrate leadership in disseminating and communicating the Ibrahim Forum findings and outcomes at national, regional and international levels.
Experience and Qualifications
· University degree in economics, development studies, political science, social science or related field. A post-graduate degree in a related field is desirable;
· 2 – 3 years experience working in a similar role;
· Experience in research methodologies, statistical methods and analysis, with knowledge of index calculation. Experience with statistical packages, such as SPSS and Stata, is desirable;
· Excellent computer skills, particularly MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word;
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language required, other United Nations languages desirable);
· Ability to work comfortably with numbers and interpret data;
· Ability to prioritise and multi-task, with strong organisational skills and a detail orientated approach;
· Self-starter with proactive attitude and strong interpersonal skills;
· Interest in African governance and international development;
· Comfortable working as part of a team but also able to work well independently;
· Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
