STAP-SENIOR DIRECTOR, GENDER AND EMPOWERMENT

CARE is seeking an experienced Senior Director of the Gender and Empowerment (GE) team to be responsible for setting the organization’s strategic vision and direction, along with leadership and institutional support for gender and empowerment approaches into programmatic efforts across all sectors and institutional relationships. S/he ensures linkages to institutional advocacy, partnerships, fundraising, and internal technical and functional teams, and ensures consistency of approaches with other CARE International members and regions.
The Senior Director leads and supervises a team whose mandate is to generate, harvest, cross-fertilize and promote the practical application of knowledge and learning about gender-transformative approaches to poverty reduction throughout CARE, and globally. Reporting to CARE USA’s Vice President for Program, Partnerships, Learning and Advocacy, the Senior Director oversees the implementation of Gender and Empowerment team’s plans and initiatives, establishing and continuing a strong collaborative relationship with other key teams across CARE and externally.
Specifically, theSenior Director:
· Sets strategic direction and manages the Gender and Empowerment Team, in line with (and contributing to) divisional and organizational strategies;
· Promoting, and ensuring learning and knowledge management on Gender and Empowerment issues programmatically;
· Informing, learning from, and building relationships with key external organizations, alliances and coalitions, leveraging data from CARE’s and partners’ work to inform advocacy and other external development community fora;
· Ensures direction and systems for capacity building and organizational growth in applying gender-transformative approaches and achieving CARE’s vision and mission.
· Fosters donor relations and ensures consistent fundraising for gender-transformative programming.

Required:
· Masters Degree in social sciences. Formal training in gender studies, women’s studies or a research focus on issues related to the job
· 15 years of experience in international development
· 10 years of experience in leading gender equality and equity;
· 8 years of experience engaging at a leadership level in the international field of gender equity/women’s empowerment.
· Fluency in at least one world language, other than English, preferably Spanish, French, Portuguese or Arabic
· Extensive demonstrated conceptual and practical knowledge of gender issues, focusing on the history and practice of promoting girls and women’s leadership and empowerment, and positive engagement of boys and men to promoting gender equality and women’s rights.

Desired:
· Ph.D. in social sciences
· Three years experience in fundraising, external relationship-building, and / or advocacy
· Five years hands-on experience in developing countries
· Three to five years’ experience with adolescent programming
· Three years’ experience in education programming
· Experience with social activism on issues of social justice
· Entrepreneurial approach to organizational and programmatic change
· Experience working in social change and justice
