Trustee Concern Universal

Concern Universal is an international development organisation tackling poverty from the grassroots. We create opportunities for people around the world to improve their lives and shape their own futures. By building skills and connecting people at all levels in society, we help communities deliver practical solutions with long term impact.

Working with partner organisations, we support community projects that improve livelihoods, reduce vulnerability and promote greater equality. To achieve this, we also influence policy, pioneer business partnerships and engage public support for our approach.

We wish to recruit one new member to join our ten-strong board of trustees. We need people who can help Concern Universal achieve its mission and ensure the organisation is effectively governed. You would need to be able to make a commitment to Concern Universal and devote the necessary time and be well-informed with an interest in world affairs and international development.

Requirements:
• Ideally you will have skills and experience in one or more of the following: Finance; Marketing, Communications and Fundraising; HR; Programme Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluating, Impact; Advocacy, Good Business, Global Movement, Effective Development; Research; Microfinance.
• Able to contribute at least two days of your time each quarter
• Responsibility; willingness to take a leadership role within the Board
• Be able to travel to Hereford office for meetings regularly throughout the year, or join via web conferencing
• Have an appreciation of voluntary and community organisations
• Are a critical thinker, able to challenge and work individually as well as to work as team member.

Previous experience of working with Concern Universal can be highly advantageous but we are also looking for candidates who are new to Concern Universal. We are particularly keen to achieve a more diverse board of trustees, and we welcome applications from all sections of the community.

We will pay trustees’ travel expenses and provide an induction into Concern Universal’s work.

Trustee Role Description

Statutory duties
1. To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
2. To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
3. To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects: the organisation must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are
4. To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating
performance against agreed targets
5. To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
6. To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
7. To ensure the financial stability of the organisation
8. To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds
9. If the organisation employs staff, to appoint the chief executive officer and monitor his/her performance

Other duties
In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve:
• Scrutinising board papers, reading reports and bulletins
• Leading discussions
• Focusing on key issues
• Providing guidance on new initiatives
• Other issues in which the trustee has special expertise
