Allston Burr Resident Dean

Title Allston Burr Resident Dean
School Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area Office of Student Life, Harvard College
Position Description

Harvard College has a Residential College system, comprised of four areas in the freshman Yard and 13 upperclass Houses. All students are required to live in residence for their first year. After the first year, 98 percent of students live on campus. The Allston Burr Resident Dean is responsible for advising undergraduate students in one House (approximately 400-550 upperclass students); representing students at the Administrative Board; working with faculty members and departments on academic issues affecting individual students; and providing friendly support through meals, House activities, office hours, and casual contact. Given the nature of the Residential College System, the Allston Burr Resident Dean works closely with the Secretary of the Administrative Board, House Staff, the Office Student Life, the Undergraduate Education Office, and the Advising Programs Office. The Allston Burr Resident Dean is a member of the Administrative Board of Harvard College, which meets weekly during term time to consider undergraduate petitions for exceptions to College rules, as well as to review unsatisfactory academic records and matters of College discipline. The Allston Burr Resident Dean plays a critical role in both individual and community crisis management and in House disciplinary incidents. The Allston Burr Resident Dean appointment is academic with administrative responsibilities and is usually coupled with a second appointment within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (ordinarily a teaching appointment at the level of lecturer). The Allston Burr Resident Dean mentors students on a wide range of issues and concerns, both academic and nonacademic. The Allston Burr Resident Dean is supported by an assistant and reports to the Dean of Student Life and the House Masters.
