Business Development Manager New York

The Business Development Manager (BDM) works in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment to identify, prepare for, and bring to fruition new business opportunities in the public and private sectors. Working under the supervision and guidance of the Director for Business Development, the BDM’s primary mission is to manage the positioning for, development, finalization and submission of high quality proposals, letters of interest, and concept papers to bilateral, multilateral, and other donors. The BDM plays the central role in managing proposal-related processes and ensuring the cross-functional teamwork required across the organization to submit solid, winning proposals. The BDM ensures that the final proposal is programmatically sound, responsive to donor guidelines and requirements, and advances EngenderHealth’s new business and program development priorities. This mid-level position requires an understanding of and the aptitude to succeed in a competitive, fast-paced business development environment, excellent writing, partnering, interpersonal and team management skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Gather, track, synthesize, and disseminate intelligence and other information regarding new business opportunities in the public and private sectors related to bilateral (e.g., USAID, DFID) and multilateral donors, foundations, corporations, and other donors.

2. Manage assigned positioning or capture processes to scope out/prepare for anticipated future donor procurements. This includes environmental scanning, intelligence gathering, conducting competitive analyses, developing/implementing partnering and staffing strategies, and coordinating advance program strategy development for anticipated procurements

3. Manage the development, finalization and submission of assigned proposals, in coordination with other EngenderHealth staff and partner organizations. This includes:

Prepare for and participate in ‘bid/no-bid’ decisions.

Manage day-to-day operations of the assigned proposal team, from initiation of the proposal through submission.

Design, plan, facilitate and follow-up proposal team meetings and partners’ meetings.

Assist in managing partner negotiations and proposal development relationships. This includes supporting the development of partnering strategies; coordinating partner negotiations and development of Teaming Agreements; ensuring timely proposal inputs and deliverables from partners; and constructive problem-solving

Write and/or edit collateral documents needed for proposals including capability statements, past performance references, personnel resumes, job descriptions, and background information on the relevant subject area.

Write and/or revise proposal sections such as executive summary, technical approach, management and staffing plans, and other sections as assigned. Contribute to writing in areas of programmatic and/or technical expertise.

Coordinate all aspects of the technical and cost applications, working with the assigned leads for the technical and cost sections of the proposal, grants and contracts staff, and human resources staff for recruitment and personnel related matters.

Ensure effective participation and input, as needed, from field-based managers, technical, and operations support staff

Ensure timely production and submission of assigned proposals in collaboration with other business development team members. This includes editing the final document, providing basic formatting and overseeing additional formatting, and final production and submission of all sections and cover letters.

4. Manage the post-submission period, including coordination of best and final offers and facilitating post-submission debriefings. Coordinate and support the hand-off and transition of awarded projects to EngenderHealth implementation team(s).

5. Cultivate external communication networks among donors, partners, potential partners, and competitors, to assist the gathering of information and identification of trends and resources in order to inform organizational strategy and help position for new business opportunities.

6. Oversee consultants who are engaged to assist with business development including writers, capture specialists, researchers, and proposal managers.

7. Develop and write other documents as needed for proposals and marketing of EngenderHealth programs to potential donors.

8. Contribute to the refinement and use of EngenderHealth’s standard operating procedures for program and new business development.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s or other advanced degree, or equivalent demonstrated work experience, in public health, international development, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience including:

o Three + years in program design, management, implementation, and monitoring of large-scale donor programs, preferably in the SRH field including family planning, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, newborn/ child health, gender integration, or related global health and international development fields.

o Experience in developing, writing, editing and finalizing complex proposals for various bilateral (e.g., USAID, DFID), multilateral, and private sector donors is highly desirable.

o Experience living and/or working frequently in developing countries is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated technical ability to conceptualize, develop strategy, and plan programs in the global health and international development arena, preferably in the SRH field.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of various types of global health and/or international development donors (bilateral and multilateral donors, private foundations, and corporations).
  • Strong ability to function effectively in teams, as a member and/or as a leader.
  • Ability and flexibility to adjust work schedules and priorities to meet proposal deadlines, juggle multiple assignments, and work in a dynamic, flexible environment.
  • Strong self-management, judgment and decision making abilities.
  • Excellent ability to provide, receive and use guidance and feedback on individual tasks and overall performance.
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically 25% time or more.
  • Proficient in office software (e.g., MS Office)
  • Fluency in French, Spanish, or other additional language ability is highly desirable.
