Communications Assistant
Location: Temwa Office, Hamilton House
Closing Date: 20th January 2012
Start Date: 6th February
Duration of work: 2 days a week
Temwa is in need of someone to strengthen their UK and global communication, we need a dedicated person who can join the UK team to work on PR, web articles, social media, website development, fundraising events, and other activities as needed. The position is a part time internship and the successful candidate will be honest, confident, have a passion for international development, in particular they should and be interested in the development of Malawi. He or she will report directly to Temwa’s UK Director, although they will also be supported by the UK Fundraising & Communications Coordinator.
Key Duties:
1) Managing Temwa’s social media outlets:
• Updating social media sites on a daily basis (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
• Interacting with people on the social media sites
• Recruiting followers to Temwa pages
• Creating and maintaining an active presence in social media
2) Creating content to go on Temwa’s website:
• Writing profiles of Temwa’s supporters/partners
• Promotion of Fundraising activities
• Coordinating website re-design team and updating all web content
3) Press and PR:
• Creating press releases for Temwa fundraising activities and projects
• Coordinating and establishing press contacts
• Managing distribution of press information
• Conducting research on new and existing press and PR outlets
4) Other responsibilities:
• Assisting with fundraising events and activities and providing support at events
• Some office administration tasks as required
• Communicating with staff in Malawi to collect article and press content and project updates
• Organise research for fundraising efforts and projects
Experience, qualifications and requirements:
• Experience of working or volunteering with NGOs or charities essential.
• Experience of writing articles for websites, newspapers or magazines.
• IT and word processing skills essential.
• Excellent written and communication skills essential.
• Experience of working on fundraising events desirable.
• Experience of working with websites desirable.
• Experience with public relations and press desirable.
Temwa was registered as a UK charity in December 2003 and currently employs 30 full time members of staff in Malawi, with a part time UK Director and Development Manager in the UK who are supported by UK Fundraiser and a team of part time volunteers. We believe the role will provide an interesting and rewarding opportunity in a small, dynamic and not always conventional organisation. As a rapidly growing NGO, working as a key part of the UK team will give you a pivotal role in the organisations ongoing development. As the UK Communications Assistant you will have the opportunity to put your previous experience into great use, while learning an array of new skills, you will directly see the benefit of the work undertaken in the UK and how it supports the projects in Malawi.
