The University of Pretoria is one of the leading research universities in South Africa The Faculty is one of the most comprehensive Humanities Faculties in the country with its 18 academic departments. The Faculty is committed to sustaining critical intellectual enquiry and delivers students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level with excellent qualifications in languages, basic and applied social sciences and the arts.

The position of Professor and Dean of the Faculty will be vacant with effect from 1 January 2012 and suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply.

DUTIES:

The successful candidate must be able to provide strong academic leadership to the Faculty, promote excellence in teaching and learning as well as research and community engagement, and create environments in which these can flourish. The establishment and enhancement of centres of excellence will be a requirement for the incumbent. A strong initiative to enhance the Faculty’s ability to attract contract research funding is also required. The Dean is expected to market the Faculty, to undertake fundraising and to promote regional, national as well as international liaison with other academic institutions, research organisations, professional bodies, government and the community. The Dean must also support the University’s endeavours with regard to its campus companies, including those pertaining to continuing education.

The Dean is assisted by appropriate management and support structures, including by two Deputy Deans, Heads of Department and additional administrative and support staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• An appropriate Doctorate in the Humanities
• Ability to provide academic leadership in the Faculty, and to enhance and build the Faculty’s academic stature
• Proven management expertise, skills and competencies in all areas required to manage the Faculty
• Proven research ability and an established record of research achievement, as well as the ability to create an environment where research activities are supported and can flourish
• Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication and appropriate language skills
• The Dean must enhance and add value to the senior management team of the University.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

• An academic background or experience in a higher education institution, especially in a management capacity, will be a very strong recommendation.

The Dean is appointed for a term of four years, but external candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department within the University.
