City Farm Treasurer Freightliners City Farm

Freightliners City Farm is a countryside oasis in the heart of London. This small farm in an urban setting provides the opportunity for local individuals and groups to learn from and interact with the environment and each other through animal care, horticulture and sustainable practices. It's purpose is to provide an educational and recreational recourse for the community, promoting social welfare and quality of life through a collaborative and inclusive community project.

Freightliners Farm was founded on wasteland behind Kings Cross station in 1973, originally housing the animals railway goods vans, hence the name. The Farm moved to its present site in Islington in 1978. Freightliners is the only city farm in the UK which has a non-slaughtering policy. Entrance to the farm is free although visitors are encouraged to leave donations.

The diversity of our 45,000 visitors, 200 school visits and numerous volunteers each year reflects the full mix of local residents, with Islington combining some of the most attractive streets and properties in London, with some of the most deprived areas in the country. We have a specific focus on providing alternative education for young people.

The farm is run by five members of staff, led by the farm manager and supported by a management committee who are also the trustees of the charity.
Primary duties:

The Treasurer has the role of overseeing the financial matters of the charity, reporting to the management committee about the financial health of the organisation. The treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place, and are appropriate for the charity. Overall responsibility for financial matters rests collectively with all trustees.

We are seeking a hands-on Treasurer who will be able to help with day to day accounting activity, such as book keeping, banking and management accounts.

As a trustee serving on the management committee the treasurer is jointly responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. This includes its financial health, probity of its activities, and developing the organisation's aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the charity's governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Required qualifications:

The farm welcomes individuals of all backgrounds. The Treasurer will have professional experience of financial management and accounting. The ability to spend some time at the farm during working hours each fortnight would be highly beneficial, and as such the post may suit those not working a typical 5-day week. This could suit retired individuals or part time workers. Additional skills that can aid the farm such as fundraising, legal guidance, profile raising, youth engagement or manual work would be a great benefit.

Very importantly you will love the farm's charitable mission and will be a great advocate of its activity and importance for the local community.
