Commercial Finance Analyst (Malts and Innovation)

The Malts and Innovation Decision Support Analyst sits within the Global Marketing team, while reporting into the Finance function. This role covers two key areas:

  • Decision Support for key Global Marketing led Innovation projects

  • Lead the annual Malts allocation process with Supply and Markets, while adjusting for short term performance and long term strategy

This role will be based in London.


Purpose of Role

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Deliver the financial support, challenge and business partnering required to deliver key Innovation projects within the Global Brand teams regions by working on specific projects

  • Drive the Malts allocation process to optimise the value of our Malt Scotch, while adjusting for short term performance and long term strategy

  • Use (and develop if necessary) tools and techniques that drive financial rigour into the decision making in order to enable the business to quantify and make the right investment decisions that drive the most value



Top 3-5 accountabilities

Innovation Decision Support (50% of time)
Provide great financial leadership on key Global marketing led innovations. Ensure that appropriate rigor is applied to decision making and that financial implications are understood and stakeholders are aligned.
Process is to deliver scenario planning and business case analysis across key Global Marketing projects (High Value At Stake or High Complexity) by:

  • Gaining a full understanding of business context around innovation

  • Running and coordinating financial analysis / scenario planning

  • Using the tools and processes of evaluation to facilitate constructive challenge to overall investment decisions into the organisation

  • Working closely with Supply to ensure optimal COGS and therefore GM%

  • Preparing a robust and impartial financial assessment of project

  • Supporting Marketing project lead in aligning stakeholders and delivering a robust Gate paper

Malts allocations Decision Support (50% of time)
1. Drive and deliver annual Malts allocation process:

  • With Supply agree next fiscal year’s stock availability for allocated malts

  • Propose a draft split of the stock to the Malts GBD to maximise profit. Adjust to account for strategic considerations

  • Issue and align allocations with markets

  • Reconcile Strat Plans submitted to allocations issued by market

  • Revise allocation if necessary versus year end stock position

  • Final number has to be agreed for AOP

  • On an ongoing basis link allocations to active short term performance (R&Os) to drive incremental profit –reallocate additional liquid opportunities, reallocate slow moving goods, drive incremental pricing initiatives...

2. Support Long Term Malts Strategy and Supply Planning
Working with Malts GBT and Supply agree and maintain a rolling 15-20 yr forecast aligned to Malts Vision and ambition for key brands.
Engage with Supply Planning to ensure their support of brand variant strategies


Qualifications and experience required


  • Highly analytical and numerate. Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills. Ability to analyse at a detailed level but translate this data into commercially strong insights and actions

  • Commercial Finance background within Consumer Goods or another fast paced industry.

  • Strong communication, business partnering skills, ability to influence senior stakeholders. Ability to build great relationships

  • Commercial Acumen: Possesses comprehensive understanding of the commercial environment to analyse business and situational context to create maximum business value

  • Strategic Thinking; need to have ability to quickly grasp business context & evaluate strategic alternatives and their financial and wider impact
