Project Accounting Specialist

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a Project Accounting Specialist with high level of commitment to provide financial analysis and support the area in serving mainly an important project led by CIP, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweet potato, and Andean roots and tubers. Its vision is of roots and tubers improving the lives of the poor. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 50 donor members.

The Position: This position will be based in Lima, Perú and report directly to Supervisor of Restricted Projects. The Project Accounting Specialist will support the Finance Unit in implementing CIP’s organizational mission through efficient and effective management of accounting and financial management. This position will assist in the preparation of annual budgets, quarterly forecasting, and financial reports. The Project Accounting Specialist will support the Unit in servicing mainly the Consortium Research Program 3.4: Root, tubers and bananas for food security (CRP 3.4 project) and income interacting with CIP matrix units or divisions, and regional offices as required. This new collaboration, with its combined scale and capacity, will increase the ability to advance research, share knowledge, and enhance uptake to increase research and development impacts.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide financial management support to the CRP 3.4 project portfolio and Program Director
  • Provide financial analysis to project portfolio
  • Assist in preparation of the portfolio’s annual budgets and quarterly forecasting
  • Provide accounting oversight support to project portfolio through the analysis of monthly expenditure reports to accounting system
  • Review monthly bank reconciliations
  • Register project overhead charges
  • Provide treasury support to project portfolio through receipt of monthly funding requests analysis of project funding requirements, and confirmation of funding transfers
  • Prepare financial reports for both internally and externally consumption
  • Support Grants and Contracts and the Program Director (PD) in performing due diligence activities for the award of partner and subrecipient agreements
  • Work to support the CRP 3.4 Program Management team cross functionally
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Selection criteria:

  • Accounting or Finance Degree with a minimum of 4 years related work experience or 5 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree requirements.
  • Previous experience working for International Non-Government Organizations or Non-Profits.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at once; superior organizational skills; attentive to details.
  • Analytical Decision Making, identifying and understanding issues and opportunities; using effective approaches for developing appropriate solutions, taking action that is consistent with available facts and probably consequences.
  • Planning and Organizing, establishing course of action for self and others to ensure that work is completed effectively.
  • Time Management Skills to manage effectively one’s time and resources to organize and prioritize workload activities and deliver on-time results.
  • Team Building, proven ability to work with team members toward a common vision and objectives.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent intercultural communications skills.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
