Head of Strategy & Planning Greenpeace International Amsterdam, Netherlands

Purpose of the job

The purpose is to lead the development, co-ordination and implementation of organisational strategies across Greenpeace globally. This includes developing, improving and integrating the various planning processes that take place in the organisation globally, including the integration of programme planning with the rest of the overall strategies.

Main responsibilities

1. Strategy Development and Coordination

The development of global Greenpeace strategies for its organization by developing and co-ordinating key elements, which includes (but is not limited to):

  • The big strategic issues facing our organization in the positioning of Greenpeace worldwide
  • The identification and responses to new and developing models of global activism, on-line and off-line
  • The determination of Greenpeace’s geographic priorities, to include the manner it develops its “global footprint” for all competencies and capabilities across the globe, both in physical and virtual presences
  • The design and development of strategic changes in organization competencies across all Greenpeace’s functions

The development of Greenpeace’s internal organizational strategies, including (but not limited to):

  • The ways of working globally in programme and support activities
  • The core processes that tie the organization together
  • The development and integration of the organisation’s global and local planning processes across its functions and competencies

2. Leading the planning and implementation of Organisational Change

Responsible for managing a Project Management Office (PMO) with the following key responsibilities:

  • Project management and coordination of the multi-year Operating Model implementation plans. This is a set of major change programs affecting virtually all areas of GPI and the global organization
  • Managing a portfolio of strategies in implementation, including monitoring, ensuring strategic objectives are being met and that the impact is integrated and cohesive
  • This monitoring and assessment role includes the responsibility to intervene, identify gaps, manage strategy changes
  • Assists NROs where applicable. In cooperation with the Development Function of Greenpeace, aligns the global plans with the NROs’ strategic planning efforts.

3. Management responsibilities

  • Designs and monitors the budgets across all organizational strategic and organizational initiatives (Strategies and Operating Model).
  • Manages the Project Management Office which includes full time staff and also a number of part time dedicated Strategy Project coordinators from across the organization.
  • Sets and manages the Strategic Agenda of the Global Leadership team

4. External involvement

  • Responsible for following and understanding the developments in the organization, strategies, technology, communications, business and operating model changes in the world of NGOs and environmental organizations.
  • responsible for identifying and assessing external developments for opportunities for innovative changes (i.e. disruptive developments, new models for mobilisation) and – together with IED and the Global Leadership Team – places those on the global agenda for further development where appropriate.
  • Assists the IED in representing the organisation in external forums that are relevant to the understanding of Greenpeace’s place in the world, and to the potential impact and opportunity for new strategies.

Skills required & qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years experience in a management /strategy consulting environment, or in a similar position within a global organisation
  • Masters degree education in a related field.
  • Significant experience and track record of working at the highest level in international organisations
  • Solid strategy development credentials gained in industry or international NGOs
  • Exceptional process skills aimed at creating change in complex environments
  • Ability to project confidently at the highest level of Greenpeace management
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Interpersonal skills to thrive in a multicultural opinionated environment
  • Ability to create and manage change processes, with tact and persistence
  • Analytical ability
  • High level of personal and work organisation; efficiency; orientation to detail
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written)
