Communications & Marketing Officer (F/t)

The Role

Ideal for a candidate who has charity communications experience and is looking for a new challenge in a dynamic team or a communications specialist looking to move into the charity sector.

Role Description

The Communications and Marketing strategy is defined on an annual basis to fit the current needs of the organisation.
In 2012/13 we have four key objectives:

  1. To support the Fundraising Team to maximise voluntary income for the organisation
  2. To attract the right participants to our UK based training courses
  3. To improve RedR’s profile
  4. To ensure consistent brand & marketing.
    The team have developed an increasingly effective website and maximises all online channels. Other key areas of activity include impact reporting, print production management, design, video production and media/PR.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As part of the Comms & Marketing team to implement RedR’s communications and marketing strategy. This will include, but is not limited to, some of the following activities
    • Copy-writing and production of key RedR publications including Annual Review and bi-annual RedAlert supporters magazine.
    • Development and management of RedR’s website and extranet.
    • Research and write copy for external articles and press.
    • Supporting internal communications across RedR in the UK and internationally.
    • Production of monthly e-newsletter
    • Collation of personal stories/case studies and to undertake impact reporting trips to RedR’s country programmes as required.
    • Implementing the marketing plan for the promotion of UK based training courses
    • Video production for fundraising and marketing purposes.
    • Developing promotional and informational materials (printed and email format) for RedR activities (including fundraising, international programmes, recruitment, and UK training courses).
  • To support other departments, particularly the Fundraising and Learning and Development teams to develop their messaging and materials.
  • To champion and monitor the use of RedR brand guidelines and key messages.
  • To keep within agreed expenditure levels and to record all expenses in the correct way.
  • Working with external communications agencies and suppliers as needed (photographers, designers, printers etc).
  • Carry out other general communications and marketing tasks that may arise in the Fundraising and Communications Team.
  • To line-manage Communications Volunteers, monitoring, evaluating and appraising their activities.
  • To deputise if needed for the Comms&Mkg Manager in responding to media enquiries out of hours when necessary, particularly during disaster emergencies.

Other

  • To work occasional weekend and evening events where necessary.
  • As RedR UK is a member of the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) all staff are required to demonstrate accountability in their duties and responsibilities and to conduct their behaviour according to the requirements of HAP.
  • As part of the office team, assist with general administrative duties including answering incoming phone calls, hosting visitors, supporting volunteers etc.
  • Any other reasonable tasks or duties as required by the line manager or organisation.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent, preferably in a communications or marketing related subject.
  • At least 1 years relevant experience covering a broad range of communications and marketing methods. Demonstrable experience of the charity sector.
  • Experience in at least four of these areas
    • Writing/editing/sourcing case studies, news and interviewing for a range of audiences.
    • Building a case for support and reporting on impact
    • Editing and producing publications
    • Working with websites including web design, development, optimisation and editorial oversight
    • Working with e-communications
    • Developing strong visual brand
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for maximising social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
  • Highly computer literate including familiarity with Quark or similar software packages
  • Demonstrable team working skills with a flexible and adaptable approach to work
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to liaise confidently internally as well as with external supporters and suppliers
  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good international cultural awareness and willingness to travel to RedR’s international programmes, often in difficult and insecure environments.
  • Commitment to the international disaster relief sector and RedR’s aims and objectives.

Desirable

  • Journalistic skills including sourcing and writing news stories, interviewing, feature writing, etc.
  • Media relations experience
  • Photography or Video Production skills
  • Experience working with international team
  • Experience of working for an international NGO, preferably in the humanitarian or international development sector.
