Country Director BBC Media Action Juba, South Sudan
BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. We do this through our focus on governance and human rights, health, humanitarian response and resilience. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). As Country Director for South Sudan based in Juba, you’ll lead us into an exciting new phase of projects development through 2013 and beyond.
Role
As Country Director, you’llassume overall responsibility for delivering projects in South Sudan to agreed targets and objectives. Therefore, you’ll be identifying funding opportunities, developing funding proposals, and securing funding. Within this, you’ll also be managing in-country teams and ensuring the quality and cohesion of project outputs. So, you’ll take ownership of project financial management as well as reporting on editorial and operational progress to our London office and project donors. Critically, you’ll be our main representative in South Sudan to key stakeholders and so you’ll forge strong partnerships with funding agencies, government bodies, broadcasters and other relevant bodies.
Requirements
You’ll demonstrate substantial management experience, ideally in a media and/or international development setting, with proven ability to deliver complex projects within deadline and budget. Critically, you’ll bring significant experience of managing large scale annual budgets of no less than £500K. Additionally, you’ll have a strong understanding of international development and using the media for development goals. You’ll combine this with a strong track record of developing proposals and raising funds from donor agencies. Naturally, you’ll supplement this with an excellent field-based knowledge of the development and/or media context in East Africa, or experience in a conflict / post-conflict settling. In particular, you’ll bring demonstrable experience of managing staff safety and security within these settings.
