LOCATION:    One Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, New York, NY
 
ASSIGNMENT LENGTH:    Two years, renewable by mutual consent and availability of funding
 
POSITION SUMMARY: With shrinking gender gaps in education and rising enrollment rates among girls, increasingly the place where adolescent girls are to be found is in school, not out of school. The Council is prioritizing research and program development on girls’ education and its implications for girls’ transitions to adulthood in its current portfolio of work on adolescent girls. The Poverty, Gender, and Youth program is seeking an outstanding researcher to expand and lead a program of research on girls’ education. The successful candidate will have a substantial track record in designing, implementing, and publishing research that examines topics such as barriers to girls’ enrollment and retention during adolescence and the implications of educational choice and quality for learning and longer-term outcomes such as employment, marriage and parenthood. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:   
 
1.      Lead the Council’s program of research on girls’ education: identify priority areas for study, develop and evaluate innovative interventions, conduct statistical analyses of existing data and collect new data where needed
 
2.      Conduct individual and collaborative policy relevant research with Council colleagues and in countries where the Council works
 
3.      Develop funding proposals and establish effective relationships with donors
 
4.      Provide technical advice and strategic guidance to Council colleagues on girls’ education research and programming
 
5.      Represent the Council in professional meetings, international fora, and the media
 
QUALIFICATIONS:   
 
1.      Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., sociology, education, economics) and 5-7 years postdoctoral experience
 
2.      Solid record of peer-reviewed publications on girls’ education and related topics
 
3.      Demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals
 
4.      Excellent representational and interpersonal skills
 
5.      Experience implementing field-based research in developing countries is highly desirable
 
6.      Willingness to travel internationally as required
