Research Associate, Impact Investing & Program Related Investments


The Foundation is seeking a Research Associate (RA) to support the organization’s development and execution of key initiatives through research and design, strategic insight and support of overall team activities. 
RAs are typically deployed concurrently to two initiative teams and deployments can change based on the approval of future work of the Foundation. This position will first be responsible for supporting the Program Related Investments (PRI) portfolio. PRIs are used by Foundations, similar to grants, as a tool to forward their programmatic objectives. The Rockefeller Foundation makes PRIs, opportunistically, across all of its issue areas. The existing investments - which were made for both social and financial return - include debt, equity and guarantees. The current portfolio is approximately $25 million and contains international and domestic investments. The RA’s second deployment will be to the Impact Investing (II) team to coordinate and facilitate the Foundation’s engagement with the emerging II industry. This includes monitoring of existing grants and non-grant activities under the Impact Investing initiative and participation in the development manage and execution of future strategy.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Associate will be responsible for supporting the full PRI investment process – including but not limited to monitoring existing PRI investments and assisting with vetting and executing new deals:
  • Proactively sourcing and developing a pipeline of new investment opportunities;
  • Conducting comprehensive financial and social due diligence on potential investment opportunities;
  • Assisting in structuring and negotiating the terms of new investments;
  • Providing day-to-day interface with and support to management teams of existing and prospective portfolio investments;
  • Liaising with other foundation initiative teams, the investments office, finance and the general counsel’s office on relevant investment opportunities;
  • Working with Associate Director and outside counsel to structure, negotiate and close transactions
  • Communicating with and assisting with the preparation of appropriate documentation for investment committee approval and general update processes;
  • Tracking the receipt of periodic financial and social reporting; and,
  • Inputting, formatting, synthesizing data and identifying trends for internal reporting to the Investment Committee.
  • Through research and analytics, contribute to the learning and strategy shaping and/or monitoring and evaluation plan of initiatives.
  • Assist with the expansion of the Foundation’s relationships and network in the impact investment and related communities
  • Represent the work of the Foundation at external conferences and forums, as assigned by Manager.
  • Provide day-to-day interface with and support to grantees to structure grants, write grant memos, research potential grantees in coordination with the Office of Grants Management.
  • Monitor and tracking performance of grants, including researching and evaluating grantee performance and commenting on grantee reports and other deliverables.
  • In collaboration with the initiative team and the evaluation department, support monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Contribute to articles, papers, op-eds, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education, Training and Experience 

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, international affairs, or related field
  • Minimum of three years working in banking (preferably investment or commercial) or private equity required
  • International development, government sector, NGO experience preferred
  • Genuine interest in philanthropy and social impact
  • A strong orientation towards being responsive, analytically rigorous and creative
  • Foreign Language(s) a plus
