VACANCY NOTICE

GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR (SECONDARY)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the post of Guidance Counsellor (Secondary) in the Ministry of Education.


Responsibilities will include:


• To provide appropriate Personal, Moral and Social Education (PMSE) to groups of students and individual counseling

• To provide leadership, in consultation with the management of the school, and under the supervision of the Education Psychologist for the school’s guidance programme, in accordance with goals and objectives developed cooperatively

• To work with the Education Psychologist to facilitate continuous professional development activities related to students health, safety and development at the school level

• To work with the Education Psychologist to evaluate the Guidance and Counselling programme at the Secondary School

• To work with the school management and the psychologist to foster a nurturing environment at the school

• To provide individual and group activities in Career Education, subject selection counselling and the coordination of appropriate resources and services

• To assist in developing profiles of students (aptitudes, achievement, interests) Individual Education Plan (IEPs) and providing feedback on the curriculum needs of students where appropriate

• To assist teachers to incorporate objectives from the affective domain in the regular curriculum

• To liaise with persons and agencies outside the school and with homes on child welfare safety and developmental issues

• To maintain links with feeder schools and post-secondary institutions regarding transition

• To assist teachers by providing advise on cognitive and other developmental issues of each child as necessary

• To develop and maintain awareness of referral resources in the community.

Qualifications and Experience


Candidates must have 

• A Bachelors Degree in Counselling or related field. Post Graduate studies in a related area will be considered an asset 
• At least five years of successfully delivering counseling services to young people
• Knowledge of delivering counseling services and/or pastoral care in Secondary Schools
• Professional Teacher Training Certification would be an asset
• Basic word processing and presentational skills
• The ability to form positive relationships with students, staff, parents and other members of the community
• Effective communication skills
• A helpful, friendly but discrete demeanor is especially desirable

Terms of Appointment

Appointment will be made on a permanent basis with a ten (10) months probationary period or on a contractual basis for three (3) years in the first instance. 

Remuneration Package

Basic salary is in the scale R22 - R16, that is EC$49,392 to EC$58,896 per annum. At the successful completion of the contract a gratuity of 12.5% of earned salary is payable.

Basic salary is subject to income tax.
