The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international financial institution that fosters international monetary cooperation and financial stability and provides banking services to central banks and international organisations. Based in Basel, Switzerland, with representative offices for Asia and the Pacific in Hong Kong SAR and for the Americas in Mexico City, the BIS has approximately 600 staff from some 50 countries.

The BIS Legal Service advises the Board, Management and the business areas of the BIS on all legal matters relating to the Bank’s activities. It also facilitatesdiscussion and cooperation among central bank lawyers and other professionals on legal topics of common interest. We are a small team of nine lawyers and five support staff.

Job description:

The successful candidate will assist on a variety of matters that could include:

• the legal status of the BIS and the privileges and immunities of international organisations;
• the hosting arrangements between the BIS and the entities hosted by it;
• reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts for the procurement of goods and services;
• human resource matters, including the Bank’s staff health insurance arrangements and matters referred to the Bank’s administrative tribunal; and
• banking matters, including reviewing counterparty terms and conditions, guarantees and market standard agreements.

Required qualifications and experience:

• at least five years of relevant professional experience as a lawyer, ideally gained with an international organisation, central bank or other organisation operating in a relevant field;
• good knowledge of public international law and/or of the law of the international civil service with additional knowledge of international financial law an advantage; and
• excellent legal drafting skills in English; fluency in another major world language would be an additional advantage.
