The Advocates for Human Rights is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Women’s Human Rights Program. The Advocates for Human Rights is a volunteer-based, non-governmental, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights.
The Women’s Human Rights Program applies international human rights standards to advocate for women’s rights in the United States and around the world. Using research, education and advocacy, the program has partnered with local organizations overseas and in the United States to document domestic violence, rape, employment discrimination, sexual harassment in the workplace and trafficking in women and girls for commercial sexual exploitation.
Qualifications include a J.D. with at least 5 years experience in women’s human rights advocacy or violence against women issues, or experience practicing law in related areas. International experience is preferred.
Responsibilities include providing legal expertise and resources to legal professionals and advocates locally and internationally on violence against women, particularly in the areas of domestic violence and human sex trafficking. Responsibilities also include legal research, writing, training, working with volunteers, interns, advocacy groups, and international partners, and administration and substantive contributions to the Stop Violence Against Women website and mentoring tool, www.stopvaw.org. Strong interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills are required. Excellent research and writing skills are also required. Experience training legal professionals is highly recommended. Candidates must be willing to travel internationally.
Terms: This is a full-time position with an excellent vacation plan and medical/dental insurance. Compensation is commensurate with experience and within the range of similar non-profit organizations.
