Background:
The mission of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is to maintain healthy ocean ecosystems, enhance fishing livelihoods, and secure food supplies. SFP improves access to information to guide responsible seafood sourcing, and enhances the ability of seafood companies and partners to influence government fisheries policies and management practices to improve fisheries. SFP now advises more retailers in North America and the UK than any other NGO worldwide, has staff in over 15 countries and projects in over 25.
SFP works to improve fisheries through Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPs) and Aquaculture Improvement Projects (AIPs). A FIP or AIP is a collaboration between retailers, their suppliers, and NGO advisors that aims to influence government policies and management practices and improve marine conservation and fish farming practices and their sustainability. Position Description:
SFP looking for a full-time Director based in Japan to lead our efforts to engage Japanese seafood supply chains in improving fisheries and aquaculture in Japan and around the world. This leadership position will direct SFP's expansion into the Japanese market, working on two fronts. First, the Director will develop relationships with retailers and restaurant chains in Japan, using SFP's global information systems to help Japanese seafood buyers identify problematic seafood sources and then direct their suppliers on improvement requirements. Second, to work with Japanese importers and suppliers, connecting them to fishery and aquaculture improvement projects in Japan and worldwide, and advising them on launching new improvement projects if necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
• Engage new and existing supply chain partners and propose, improve and refine joint work plans and proposals for cooperation;
• Support efforts to provide Buyers with sufficient information to allow them to put in effect their sustainability strategy, and encourage supply chain to advocate and promote FIP/AIP approach;
• Japan buyer engagement strategy development;
• Develop FIP/AIP/project reports for donors, public and other relevant audiences;
• Oversee Japan Pollock Fishery Improvement Project;
• Work with partners to address Japanese imports of IUU Russian salmon;
• Other FIP / AIP initiatives as required;
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential Requirements:
• Fluent written and spoken English and Japanese;
• Demonstrated experience in fisheries science/seafood/marine conservation sectors, within Japan and throughout the North Pacific;
• Practical knowledge of sustainable seafood issues and a passionate commitment to fisheries improvement and marine conservation;
• Ability to work in a flexible, informal, and often online environment, and to balance independent initiative with working as part of a team;
• Experience, or at least familiarity, with the Marine Stewardship Council standards and processes;
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
Desired Experience:
• A MSc in fisheries science / management;
• Experience working in seafood sector - ideally from procurement in a branded seafood supplier company;
• Experience buying from producers / exporters in SE Asia / Russia / South Pacific;
• Experience with marine conservation / NGOs in Japan and globally
