SCOPE OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Director of Public Engagement, the Manager, Fund Development is responsible for spearheading and driving performance of a successful fundraising program that will support, leverage and contribute to the goals, objectives and priorities of Oxfam Canada. The Manager will provide overall leadership and direction to the Fund Development Team, implementing a comprehensive, effective and sustainable results-driven fund development plan. Leading and mentoring a successful team to meet targets, the Manager will innovate to improve results aligning resources to maximize return on investment. Working closely with key staff, within and outside the Public Engagement Department and with lead volunteers, the Manager is responsible for strategy development, planning and execution of fundraising activities to support core services and special programs and projects. She/he will manage relationships with a small number of individual and institutional donors.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fund Development Program Management:
  • Plans, oversees and manages all aspects of a comprehensive and integrated fund development plan to meet program goals and objectives
  • Ensures strategies developed and implemented for various revenue streams and fundraising methods (all direct response vehicles, monthly giving, major and institutional gifts, planned gifts, community events, corporate, online initiatives, etc.) contribute to building the donor base, retaining and increasing support from donors
  • Oversees the execution of an effective moves management strategy for donors at different stages of the giving cycle
  • Drives performance against targets for all revenue streams, tracking, monitoring and reporting on results and taking action as required to increase income
  • Develops an evaluation system for all elements of the fund development plan and reports regularly on the effectiveness, efficiency and return on investment of each of the revenue streams
  • Maintains, implements and annually reviews stewardship program
  • Works with appropriate fund development, marketing, communications and program staff to identify and develop required marketing materials – case for support, stewardship reports, etc.
  • Oversees the identification of potential prospects and develops team strategies to solicit new business to increase net revenue
  • Oversees the establishment of a strong volunteer base of fundraising champions and ambassadors
  • Utilizes existing networks to develop and implement plan to identify, recruit, train, motivate and engage key members and volunteers in fundraising, where and as appropriate
  • Under the direction of the Director of Public Engagement, helps to coordinate and integrate fundraising, where and as appropriate, into other public engagement initiatives
Business and Financial Management:
  • Prepares and monitors a detailed annual and operational plan for the Fund Development Team including setting team financial targets and managing team expense budgets
  • Contributes to the development, preparation and monitoring of the Department budget
  • Ensures required and appropriate fundraising and constituency tracking systems and operating procedures are developed and maintained
  • Provides advice to members of the Management Team and the Board on best practices and policy requirements on fundraising
  • Ensures all fundraising activities comply with all legislation and guidelines including those governing donor privacy, donor rights, CRA fundraising and charitable receipting regulations
  • Reviews and ensures Oxfam Canada's adherence to Imagine Canada's Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code (soon to be Standards Program)
Team Leadership and Development:
  • Leads, mentors and manages members of the Fund Development Team to effectively and efficiently manage their responsibilities
  • Assists staff in developing business plans outlining strategies for their respective programs
  • Oversees the development of team and individual workplans and conducts performance evaluations for all team members
  • Fosters a positive team dynamic
Personal Portfolio Management:
  • Manages a portfolio of 20-30 individual and institutional existing and/or prospective major gift donors
  • Ensures prospect research is conducted and cultivation strategies are developed and detailed for major donor prospects
  • Develops personalized and detailed strategy for assigned accounts based on the donor’s status in the major gifts cycle
  • Identifies and works with key staff and volunteers to help in the major gifts process
  • Builds relationship with assigned accounts by maintaining regular contact with donors including face-to-face meetings as appropriate
  • Ensures all contact with donors is recorded in the database

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES:
  • University degree or post-secondary diploma or equivalent combination of education and direct related experience working in fund development in a not-for-profit organization
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively senior fundraising experience; CFRE is an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of a variety of fundraising methods and vehicles, including experience soliciting and securing five- and six-figure plus major gifts
  • Sound knowledge of fundraising theory and practice, donations administration and management
  • Strong people manager with proven experience managing a team of direct reports
  • Knowledge, understanding and commitment to global justice, social change and gender equality
  • Positive track record in building and maintaining respectful and effective relationships with donors, senior managers, staff and senior volunteers
  • Excellent planning, analytical and budget management skills with ability to use judgment to problem solve and make decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English required; including the ability to effectively and concisely communicate complex issues
  • Demonstrated ability to influence prospects by demonstrating how Oxfam Canada programs align with their philanthropic priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize work and manage multiple projects with high efficiency and accuracy
  • Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner as well as demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers
  • High proficiency using computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and fundraising database; experience using SalesForce database is desirable
  • Possess excellent understanding of tax rules as applied to charitable giving and must keep abreast of new legislation and Canada Revenue Agency rulings affecting gifts
  • Knowledge of second language, including French or Spanish, an asset
  • Ability to travel periodically in Canada and to undertake international travel, sometimes in difficult circumstances.
