We are offering a six month attachment as a Political Reporter.  The successful candidate will take a specialist lead in political coverage primarily on radio but also liaising with regional television and online output. They will also advise colleagues about significant political developments of concern to the area.

Role

6 month attachment/contract
You will build-up a network of contacts among the county’s councillors, MPs and MEPs and will be able to hold them to account to the communities they represent.  You will work creatively and on you own initiative to generate original journalism which tells the stories of the people who are most directly affected by questions of public policy.
You will be working for radio bulletins and programmes, as well as contributing for Look East, the Sunday Politics and online output.
You will become an automatic point of contact for local political communities and will work to ensure that the BBC remains faithfully representative of the democratic life of the area as a whole.
You will be the producer of the monthly “Hot Seat”  programme which calls the county’s decision makers and service providers to account.

Requirements

You will have proven news judgement and a thorough understanding of the political process: how policy-formulation and decision-making work and how they impact on the lives of local communities.   You will understand the requirements of all our platforms including online. You will have an alert and active interest in local politics and a genuine grasp of how councils, Parliament and EU institutions work.  Reporting to the Editor, you will be expected to work independently and unsupervised in your pursuit of ground-breaking stories.
 
You will be expected to have strong and decisive editorial judgement as well as a heightened awareness of the need for impartiality in our political coverage.
