Communication and programme Assistant (Internship)

The International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) serves and protects uprooted people, refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants, regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality (www.icmc.net). The ICMC office in Brussels advances the rights of refugees and migrants. ICMC Europe co-manages the European Resettlement Network (www.resettlement.eu) together with IOM and UNHCR and implements the SHARE programme which works towards a European network of cities and regions involved in/or with a commitment to refugee resettlement, protection and integration. ICMC Europe is also engaged in policy building and networking with civil society in the area of migration and development and as such, implements the MADE-Migration and Development Civil Society Programme (www.madenetwork.org) which aims to strengthen civil society’s role in advocacy and work with governments to improve conditions under which migrants move, live and work.
ICMC Europe is currently recruiting a Communication and Programme Assistant under an internship contract.
The post will be based at the ICMC Europe Office in Brussels, Belgium. This post is temporary for 6 months (February – end of July 2016) and is well suited to someone with limited post‐university work experience. It will provide valuable exposure to NGO work in migration, asylum and refugee integration and the workings of the EU institutions.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY AREAS OF ACTIVITY
- Updating www.resettlement.eu and providing support for the development of the SHARE newsletter;
- Providing support for the Head of Office (research, drafting of minutes, attending meetings);
- Supporting project development;
- Structuring and maintaining ICMC Europe’s contact database, including setting up and maintaining mailing and distribution lists;
- Structuring ICMC Europe’s resource library;
- Producing and managing content for social media webpages on behalf of ICMC Europe;
- Providing inputs for ICMC events and publications
QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY COMPETENCIES
We are looking for someone who will become an enthusiastic and flexible staff member of our small but growing ICMC Europe office in Brussels.
The successful applicant will:
- Have permission to work in Belgium. ICMC Europe is not in a position to obtain a work permit for any applicant;
- Possess a BA/Graduate level degree in one of the following or related areas - communication, social sciences, international politics;
- Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English (native English level). Other languages (French, German, Spanish) are an asset;
- Have excellent writing skills and communication experience and have an ability to use social media channels to promote the activities of the organisation;
- Be a good team player, able to work in a small office environment and capable of working independently
- Be capable of working independently on assigned tasks and be well organised;
- Possess strong computer skills;
- Demonstrate proven interest in the work of ICMC and enthusiasm for working within a European NGO environment.
Additional desirable qualities include:
- BA/graduate level education e.g. Masters (communication, social studies, human rights, international politics)
- Previous experience in social media campaigns/website content management systems (e.g. Drupal) and in InDesign
- Previous knowledge of EU asylum and migration policies and EU institutions and/or previous communication experience
CONDITIONS
- Temporary contract beginning as soon as possible, running for an initial period of 6 months
- Unpaid internship position
- Full time (38 hours per week)
- National bank holidays plus one day of holiday per working month

Written assignment: Write an article for our website on refugee reception and integration programmes in the city you come from. The article must be clear and concise (maximum of one A4 page). Please present the article in its final blog format, using photographs or other visual aids as you feel necessary.
