The Southern Africa Regional Office is part of the Amnesty International Secretariat, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information regionally and globally.
About the role:
As Amnesty International’s lead expert on South Africa, you will lead on the development and implementation of overarching research strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed human rights thematic priorities, providing research expertise, research management, political judgment and analytical, communication and representational skills. The thematic focus will include but not limited to criminal justice system, policing and human rights, Human Rights Defenders, business and human rights, freedom of expression, assembly and association, socio-economic rights and strategic partnerships. In addition, the role will include leadership, management and coordination of research on Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland (BLNS) in line with the approved strategy for Southern Africa.
About you:
With proven experience of undertaking research on human rights or related issues, you will possess expert Knowledge on using evidence to support advocacy positions and preferably first-hand experience of South Africa / BLNS or key human rights themes as captured in this profile and an in-depth understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues in them. A demonstrable ability to exercise good political judgment, thorough analysis and diplomacy to develop effective strategies to impact on human rights in South Africa and the BLNS is also essential. It is also key that you have proven experience of writing research materials for a variety of audiences.
