Laboratory Superintendent

Assmang Chrome Machadodorp Works is a ferrochrome and ferromanganese smelting company based in Machadodorp, Mpumalanga Province of South Africa.

For this role, in our Services Department, we require a self-motivated, committed and resourceful person with a degree in Analytical Chemistry or similar (a postgraduate Management qualification would be an advantage) and some 10 years’ experience in a laboratory environment, of which 4 years must have been at middle management level. Knowledge of smelters/the heavy industry environment, an understanding of the operation and calibrating of the ICP, XRF, carbon and sulphur and general laboratory instruments, as well as proficiency in gravimetric analysis and wet chemical analysis, are also needed. Very strong leadership qualities, a team player orientation and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, since the incumbent will be expected to effectively manage a unionised workplace. The role furthermore demands computer literacy, competence in implementing and maintaining the ISO/IEC 17025 standard and knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards, as well as a track record of maintaining good safety and housekeeping standards. Knowledge of a LIMS programme would be an advantage. The skills set required encompasses planned task observations, risk assessments, budget management, the ability to interact at all levels and produce accurate reports and motivations, as well as administration. The person we’re after is an analytical, methodical thinker able to successfully solve problems and work under pressure, who uses a decisive, assertive approach. Business acumen, planning skills and negotiation proficiency complete the profile sought.


The successful candidate takes overall responsibility for the efficient running and proper supervision of the Laboratory, including performance and people management, quality assurance and data management. He/she ensures that all employees are fully aware of all relevant instructions, procedures and notices by conducting regular meetings, safety talks and by using the notice board to convey safety information. Compliance with all procedures and regulations is important. The role involves working overtime as and when required.
