Research and Communications Officer


The above position now exists within the Democratic Alliance. The DA is looking to recruit a self-motivated and goal-driven individual for this position, reporting directly to the Head of the Parliamentary Research and Communications Offices.


The incumbent should meet the following requirements:

Education, skills and experience:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • A firm grasp of the South African political environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literacy. Proficiency in more than one language will be advantageous



Requirements:

  • The ability to drive media issues in line with the DA’s strategy and philosophy, including but not limited to identifying and developing opportunities and generating on message coverage as a result of such opportunities
  • The ability to quickly develop an understanding of Parliament and its various mechanisms, including but not limited to written and oral parliamentary questions, members’ statements, motions of notice, committees and Parliament’s rules and procedures
  • The ability to successfully use and integrate Parliament into the DA’s communication strategy
  • An understanding of the media – print, radio and television – and the ability to organise and successfully manage press conferences and other media opportunities
  • A detailed understanding of current affairs and the national political landscape, as well as the ability to analyse and interpret political developments
  • A detailed understanding of political communication, including the ability to write to an excellent standard and produce and provide oversight over the production of press statements, speeches, articles, policy and other forms of political communication
  • A detailed understanding of the Democratic Alliance’s national policy, as well as its policy where it governs, in municipalities, the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Province
  • Excellent political judgement and the ability to work irregular hours and under extreme pressure
  • The ability to successfully work together with the national caucus to achieve the Party’s communication objectives.


Key result areas: Together with Party and portfolio spokespeople and the Head of Research and Communications, to drive issues successfully so as to effectively communicate the DA’s message.
