Department: HR and Learning & Development Salary: £37,300 to £40,300 per annum Location: London Head Office, with country visits Contract End: Until End of December 2012 (possibility of extension)

Merlin specialises in health, saving lives in times of crisis and helping to rebuild shattered health services. Each year, Merlin helps more than 15 million people in up to 20 countries.

Background:

Merlin has secured a substantial grant from a major US foundation to strengthen organisational capacity to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity by increasing access to quality reproductive health (RH) services with a particular emphasis on family planning and post abortion care. In this initial 16 months, Family Planning Approach (FPA) programme is comprised of 3 interlinked projects to be implemented across several departments in Merlin Head Office; and in specific geographic areas within Merlin’s programmes in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Pakistan. In addition to increasing access to services in each country, the programme aims to strengthen technical skills and knowledge of providers and supervisors; strengthen the commodity supply chain management; establish a quality assurance and impact measurement process and tools. Lessons learned will be used to roll out and scale up these services across Merlin’s country portfolio and inform and influence other health sector actors working in fragile contexts.

Main purpose of the role:

The Reproductive Health Training Coordinator (RHTC) will work within with the Learning and Development team and in consultation with the Health and Policy team at the Head Office; and focusing on reproductive health, will have responsibilty for the overall capacity development of Merlin HQ and Country health technical and operational programme staffs.

The RHTC role will oversee the design, implementation and roll out of a global RH training component of the programme and ensure that responsible Merlin staff have access to the most up to date and effective RH training resources. The RHTC will be the key focal point for all RH related training including design, delivery and coaching within the organisation and support the Learning and Development and Health Teams to build the skills and capacity of Merlin’s staff.

Overall Objectives

  • To facilitate the acquisition, transfer and application of technical skills and knowledge of RH within DRC and Pakistan country programmes

  • To ensure that Merlin staff in all country programmes have access to the most up to date, effective RH training material and training resources – in particular online resources

  • To document lessons learned for improved programme design, delivery and evaluation of RH resources and development materials in the implementation of the FPA programme

  • To identify key groups and participants within the organisation and ensure they receive targeted RH training opportunities

  • To work closely with the L&D team to ensure that RH is integrated appropriately into the employee’s work lifecycle at the following stages: induction, performance management and career development

  • To support the L&D team in ensuring key priorities in the capacity building work plan are met
