UNICEF DHR Emergency Unit Intern

  1. BACKGROUND :

The number of emergencies that UNICEF responds to is increasing. So is the complexity of the response. UNICEF benefits from having a presence in more than 155 countries around the world, and such presence comes with expectations to respond to natural disasters like the Haiti Earthquake and complex emergencies such as Sudan Darfur, Uganda, the Horn of Africa, to name a few. The emergency unit in DHR is a small team. Its main responsibility is to coordinate surge capacity (the ability of an office to scale up it operations in the face if disaster) to the field. This means fielding staff with very short notice. The tools we use are database systems. The team also fulfils important monitoring and evaluation functions, with regards to operational response and capacity building. The team liaises closely with the geographical clusters in Human Resources and with the Division for Emergency Programme, a Programme Division in HQ.
