The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is a global humanitarian and volunteer based organization. The IFRC works with Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies in 187 countries in responding to disasters and crises as well as development work focused on enabling healthy and safe living and promoting social inclusion and a culture of non violence and peace.

Community Programming Officer - Disaster Risk Reduction

Job description: The Community Programming Officer - DRR is a member of the Community Programming Unit (CPU) within the IFRC Pacific Regional Office based in Suva.

The CPU’s focus is to provide practical and realistic technical advice as well as programme management support in the areas community based Health and community based Disaster Risk Reduction.

The community programming officer- DRR will specially support the 13 independent Red Cross National Societies in the Pacific in community based DRR.

Under the leadership of the CPU Coordinator the successful applicant will work hand in glove with other team members to develop and support an integrated model and approach to community development.

This is an important position within the unit and will require regular travel within the Region.


Qualifications, skills, experience

• University degree in social sciences, community development or related fields

• Technical knowledge of DRR concepts, strategies, approaches and tools

• At least three years experience in the implementation DRR projects at community level

• Experience of providing distance capacity building support in the Pacific region.

• Ability to analyse different contexts utilising sound judgement

• Ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships within all levels of Pacific Red Cross National Societies

• Experience in developing knowledge and skills of others through training and mentoring

• Deep personal understanding and experience of the Pacific culture and context

• Fluency in English and good writing and reporting skills

• Self-supporting in computers (Windows, spreadsheets, word-processing, e-mail)
