English Language Tutor, University of Brighton's International College

University of Brighton's International College is looking for an English Language Tutor responsible for the delivery of modules in English and Academic Skills on programmes offered by the College.

The University of Brighton's International College, where the role is based, is a new college and welcomed its first intake of students this autumn. The college located on the University's Moulsecoomb campus. It offers programmes designed to prepare international students for entry to the University of Brighton.

A unique opportunity

Main responsibilities
The position will have responsibility for:

  • Teaching English Language and Academic Skills modules to students on programmes offered by the College (normal teaching load is approximately 18 hours per week);
  • Providing, as and when required, academic leadership, management and coordination for a designated number of modules in the role of Module Co-ordinator. This includes updating student and tutor module handbooks, inducting tutors at the start of term, providing weekly updates and support to tutors teaching the module, organizing marking, moderation and sampling of assessment scripts;
  • Providing information, academic and progression support to students through the tutorial system;
  • Assisting with formative and summative assessment of students through delivery, marking and provision of feedback to students;
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the College virtual learning environment (VLE). Facilitating student access to same;
  • Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date record of student attendance and performance. Maintaining accurate records of work;
  • Assisting with the monitoring of student progress and attendance of students and being pro-active in the early identification and support of student needs;
  • Working with the College's Student Services team in the delivery of induction, orientation and registration programmes;
  • Assisting in gathering feedback from students;
  • Participating in regular meetings with teaching and support staff and representing the College at appropriate events and meetings;
  • Assisting with Social Programme activities for students including occasional one day weekend trips and excursions;
  • Any other duties as required from time to time by the line manager, Subject Leader (ELT & Academic Skills) or the College Director.

Reporting responsibilities
The main reporting line will be in the first instance to the Subject Leader. Reporting lines are expected to change as the College grows in size.

Candidate profile
The successful candidate will enjoy working with international students, be customer orientated, performance driven and enjoy the challenge of being involved in projects at an early stage of development. In addition the successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree and preferably a Master's degree in TEFL or Applied Linguistics;
  • A CELTA and preferably a DELTA or PGCE in TEFL;
  • Significant experience of delivering EFL to international students, preferably within an international and/or a UK FE and/or HE context;
  • Ability to develop and update teaching material and preferably experience of working within a Virtual Learning Environment;
  • Strong interest in working with and supporting the needs of international students;
  • Competence in teaching and administrative IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, etc);
  • A student-centered and client-focused approach;
  • A commitment to continuous professional development;
  • Strong record-keeping skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure to deadlines;
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to be a performance-driven team player.

Salary
£26,000 - £28,000 per annum
