Program Leader - Sustainable Productivity Enhancement (SPE)
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is looking for a highly qualified Program Leader of the Sustainable Productivity Enhancement Program (SPE) who will be based at AfricaRice in Cotonou, Benin and will report to the DDG / DR4D.
About AfricaRice:
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment.
Responsibilities:
· Provide scientific leadership to AfricaRice’s ‘Sustainable Productivity Enhancement’ (SPE) Program, including the identification of priority areas for research and impact pathways;
· Assess SPE program activities for scientific quality and impact potential and efficiency and effectiveness of resource use;
· Supervise a team of internationally and regionally recruited staff based at AfricaRice’s five regional stations in Africa;
· Act as the regional theme leader for Africa for theme 3 (‘Ecological and sustainable management of rice-based production systems’) of the global rice science partnership (GRiSP), one of the CGIAR Consortium Research Programs (CRPs), led by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI);
· Lead the involvement of AfricaRice in two other CRPs, i.e. ‘Durable Solutions for Water Scarcity and Land Degradation’, coordinated by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and ‘Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security’ coordinated by the International Center for Agriculture in the Tropics (CIAT)
· Contribute to strategic decision-making and further development of AfricaRice strategies as member of the AfricaRice Program Management Committee;
· Contribute to the visibility of AfricaRice, its mission, values, products, strategies and impact;
· Contribute to resource mobilization in line with AfricaRice’s research for development strategy;
· Undertake any other duties as required by the needs of the Center and as reviewed from time to time by the DDG / DR4D.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have:
· PhD degree in a relevant field related to crop and natural resources management
· Demonstrated success in applying output-oriented and inter-disciplinary team approaches in an international context
· Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to work in diverse multi-institutional and multi-cultural settings
· Minimum of 5 years of relevant management experience
· Excellent communication skills in both English and French
· Willingness to travel frequently

· This is an internationally recruited position.

· The appointment is for three years with possibility for renewal
