Labor Program Assistant

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg is seeking an individual for the position of Labor Program Assistant in the Reporting Section.

Qualifications Required:

Items 1- 5 are ALL REQUIRED

1. Education: Successful completion of high school and two years or more of college education is required.
2. Experience: Two years of experience in office administration, administrative assistant or research is required.
3. Language: English level IV (fluent) reading/writing/speaking is required.
4. Knowledge:
- Knowledge of administrative and office support procedures including secretarial support, and travel arrangements is required.
5. Skills and Abilities:
- Well developed communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills are required.
- Ability to manage projects independently is required.
- Ability to independently draft items such as the labor newsletter by assessing a topics importance to the USG and contacting South African organizations to seek further information on those topics is required.
- Ability to manage the research logistics and organization of events and delegations independently is required.
- Ability to manage web-based information network of regional labor information is required.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite 2007 is required.

Job Specification

Basic Function of Position:
The Labor Program Assistant provides administrative support for the Reporting Section and is supervised by the Labor Specialist and Regional Labor Officer. The position also researches and drafts reports on South African economic conditions, labor policy and practices, and child labor issues. The position arranges travel for the Reporting Section and maintains contact management, correspondence, and visitors. The position creates and maintains a regional intra-mission labor sharing website for Southern Africa and a large contact database, and maintains relationships at the administrative level with local government, union, political party, civil society, and private sector organizations in order to enhance Post relationships with those organizations.
