The UK-Japan Foreign Policy Initiative (UKJFPI), established in 2012, seeks to promote the expansion of foreign policy cooperation between Japan and the United Kingdom, and to support their proactive and cooperative engagement with the wider international community. Potential avenues for such cooperation include, but are not limited to, international development; institution building; disaster relief; and democracy and human rights promotion.

UKJFPI seeks an enthusiastic Project Associate to join the UK team, starting in early September, 2012. The PA will accompany the UK Director on several missions to Tokyo in early 2013. The position represents a unique opportunity to gain leadership experience within a newly established foreign policy think-tank. There is also an opportunity for progression to a salaried full-time position should funding applications be successful. The PA will work from home, with regular phone conversations and monthly face-to-face meetings with the UK Director.

Responsibilities:

Identify and research areas for foreign policy cooperation between the UK and Japan, providing specific and targeted policy recommendations
Contribute to, and edit other’s contributions to, UKJFPI annual journal
Organise public events and seminars to promote UKJFPI publications
Maintain and develop relationship with various Japanese partners
Accompany the UK Director on missions to Tokyo in 2013, providing logistical and briefing assistance as requested
Assist in grant-writing, funding applications and website development


Qualifications:

Demonstrable interest in international affairs, human rights, or international development
Japanese language skills preferred, but not required
Ability to work independently under pressure to meet deadlines
British citizen


The position is open to all, but may suit a Masters candidate, or final-year undergraduate student of international relations, politics, international development, or related subject.
