Human Rights Watch AUSTRALIA DIRECTOR

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) seeks an Australia Director to manage the work of its new charity in Australia. The office will be based in either Sydney or Melbourne, with a strong preference for Sydney, and will be a part of Human Rights Watch’s network of affiliated offices and charities throughout Asia and the world. The office will focus primarily on working with the Australian media and government to highlight human rights problems in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, enabling Australia to play a strong and principled leadership role in curbing them.

Responsibilities:

1. Serve as the principal representative for Human Rights Watch in Australia;

2. Act as HRW’s main point of contact for the media, government, civil society and public in Australia;

3. Work with HRW’s programmatic staff to design and implement strategies to advance HRW’s work and give it maximum impact;

4. Promote HRW’s research and advocacy with the national media, government officials, and the general public;

5. Monitor Australian policy developments on issues relevant to HRW’s work, and work with other organizations in Australia to protect and promote human rights across the region;

6. Direct HRW’s fundraising and outreach work in Australia, working closely with the new Australia Committee of the Human Rights Watch Council— a global network of 600 members in 28 cities who support the work of HRW through fundraising and advocacy;

7. Identify individual and foundation donor prospects;

8. Cultivate and solicit prospective donors;

9. Oversee the holding of special fundraising events in Australia;

10. Travel internationally as required; and

11. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: An advanced degree in human rights, international relations, law, non-profit management, and/or a related field in the social sciences is highly desirable.

Experience: Significant senior-level policy, media, advocacy, management, and fundraising experienceis required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Outstanding writing, editing, advocacy, management and public speaking skills.

2. Familiarity with international human rights standards and experience with human rights issues regarding Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

3. Fundraising experience in Australia, especially with major gifts and special events.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, ideally with proficiency in another language.

5. Excellent leadership skills and a depth and breadth of management and organizational skills.

6. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with government officials and external partners.

7. Ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure with a broad range of people and as part of an international team.

Other: Australian work authorization is required.

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits. HRW will pay reasonable relocation expenses, if required.
